Megasquirts are good if you take the time to learn them.
I've got one, (today it arrived) although it's not a newer one. Still got plenty to learn about them!

How do they work? They just hooked up to the ECU? Do they link up to a computer then and you can then just change maps? It says you can change from economy to race map, would that mean you would need it linked to a laptop in the car? Worth the ££???

They are a standalone ecu mate, wire it up instead of the standard ecu. Although need to do some splicing and can use most of the original sensors.
They are linked to laptops and tuning is done with megatune program. I got a lap top for the job, ebay special!
Duel maps are possible, although I haven't read anything about it, got the link for that? But I would imagine it's possible as they are very flexible. But as to how to change them again not sure as I haven't got the newest version.
Worth it, tough to say, if you're willing to take time and learn alot about it, then I'd say so, but I like attempting new things and if I break things it's not the end of the world!

The original link if you read the product info it says this - Switchable maps: Economy/Race etc.
So it replaces the original ECU, How do you then map it so it best suits the car does the program run tests etc or do you need it on rollers? You got any pics of yours matey? Just out of interest how much did you pay, have you fitted it yet?

Wow just been reading the website and they seem pretty cool. Are the M-tech ones only for fords? As they mention Fords alot. Can they be taken off if not wanted or change of car? Or would it leave spliced wires everywhere?

Well it must be switchable then. It must be activated somehow, as it wouldn't be advertised as that if it wasn't possible. As the way I would have thought that works is a MAP is instructions so to say. And having 2 sets of instructions is easily possible, switch activated I would guess.
Mapping is probably a little trial and error, but you will need to know about how a car engine works and why it reads what it does. And also take it out on flat roads, cold starts up hill etc etc, get all the readings then, then adjust then take it out again!
Megasquirts are universal really. Just wiring and software differences really.

these seem pretty interesting and hella cheap compared to dastek and dta ecus! is it a big job splicing the existing wires? if i was to put cams in my engine, could i use this instead of a remap??

Some good links to help with the research, it's what i'm using!
p-nut yes you could, but again would need to map it yourself or take it to someone that could. As it comes blank so to say map wise, you have to do that yourself!
If you want a less hassle version mega squirt aint for you, it's cheap because you can build it yourself and have to do alot more work than off the shelf stand alone

As asked can they be switched between cars? I know a little bit and im sure i could get info from friends and family. Wouldnt get one now for my 1.1 anyways just like the idea of it and controlling it. Maybe something i would get for next motor. Really interested in them love gadgets lol.
Which make do you have The_Notorious_C_A_T?

megasquirt is a stand alone ecu you can get them cheap off ebay ready built
or you can build it yourself. ive got v2.2 because you get lunch control and boost control. but on v3 you dont unless you have add ons.so look at what one suits your engine. you can run almost any engine and with a wide band sensor you can do live mapping. or get it mapped on a rolling road.you can run dual maps for lunch control and have it on a switch. or a map for racing and one for street driving.you have to take a drive in the car and it logs the maps then you just adjust your own map to suit.you just do it a bit at a time.
