vts cylinder head

hi, i bought a big valve head for my vts and am putting pt50k kent cams and vernier pulleys on it. i was wondering if it was best to get it skimmed and pressure tested before i put it on. ????

VTR-120BHP 20th January 2009 12:57

if then head is new then no i wouldn worry about getting it skimmed, but if its second hand it would pay to get it skimmed :)

AlexB 20th January 2009 12:58

jp4 head?
might be worth it just to check its all good before it goes in

cnewcombe 20th January 2009 13:02

ok, is it not worth doing to raise compression? rather than peace of mind

VTR-120BHP 20th January 2009 13:03

there wont be bugger all clearance between your valves and your pistons if you skim it to much.... it will be close as it is with thous cams.

cnewcombe 20th January 2009 13:08

ok thanks,

About the camshafts... A waste of time IMO. Go for some 51's, or Catcam 708s or Newman's PH3's. PT50's will be hardly worth the bother.

Ryan 20th January 2009 13:40

as toad said pt 50s are a mild and (pants cam)

Re head skimming im not a fan, remeber the more you keep skimiming off the more chance of having the head written off if you have a HG failure and warping of the face

Ryan 20th January 2009 13:41

you also dont need vernier pulleys as std vts ones are adjustable

Skimming doesn't cause gasket failure or warping, don't know who told you that!

what he's saying is, if you skim the head to lower compression if your headgasket did go you wouldn have enough metal on the head to skim of to correct the warp. hope it makes more sence :)

Ha! Since you were in a correcting mood, I thought I'd give you a dose of your own medicine. :D

depends on the budget you have and how far you want to take the engine.

there is no 'best' set of camshafts for all

he'll have over 2mm clearance with those cams imo, they are very mild so will prob be near standard which has 3.5mm, lots of clearance.
