cost of a fitting a vts lump?

does anyone know of how much dropping a vts lump or even a 106 gti lump in my vtr would cost? i seen alot of you have already done it and ive kinda had this planned from the start when i bought the car wen i save up enough money and wot not? by the way considering i am no mechanic or any clue with engines so it would all have to be professionally.. thanks alot guys lee...

Yes I suppose, but id look for a garage that's done it before. Or does some form of tuning as they will be more experienced.

Also make sure you get the Ignition barrel, transponder and key with the engine you buy so you can unlock the ECU.

You dont need the ignition barrel and the trasponder. If you get an unlocked ECU then your key will work :)

Ive been looking into this myself and ive found that we are looking at arond 800. 400 for the engine and 400 labour. But hopfully one of these nice SaxP people will sort you out on the cheap. Let us know how you get on.

There is that aswell but cheaper to unlock your own. Or buy a locked one and unlock it on someone elses car VTS.

me and mate took my gti engine out with a scaffold bar lol was tricky and its a heavy bugger but it did the job! if your doing sumit like this then take the top gearbox mount off completely before lifting it out, makes life so much easier

My brother is doing his VTR/S conversion and its cost him well into 4 digits now.

The thing is, whilst the engine is out you get tempted to rebuild it and make it mint. As its alot easier to do it all whilst the engine is out the car than in. Such as cambelt, other belts, water pump, full service.

Also while hes in the process of doing it all hes bought cams and is looking into throttle bodies.

I mean you could do it on budget and get a VTS engine and just fit it. It will put a smile on your face. But having a proper coversion set up with a half (i say half because if it was me i would of got the internals uprated) rebuilt engine that is going to last you many of years and be reliable will put an even bigger smile on your face.

Also bare in mind if your going to be giving it some thrashing whilst your putting your bigger engine in you should uprate the brakes and suspension. No point in having a saxo that can go fast in a straight line, might aswell buy a corsa if your after that (heh).

Cheapest way of doing it is selling your VTR and simply buying a VTS. This is what i would do if i was you. If you have big pockets i'd recommend doing what my brothers doing and do it all properly. I keep telling him to make a progress thread :wall: He's spent thousands on his saxo and no one on this websites seen it yet.

i have to agree what is the point in spending 400 quid on all the vts bits u need and 400 quid labour ,to put a vts engine in a vtr people say my vtr has 150 bhp cammed ect no it is really a vts u just payed a shit load of money out when as said above u could sell the vtr and buy a vts and save a shit load of money and hassle

I spent 2k on my conversion just in parts lol. Uprated/replaced everything. Dont see the point of running the old 205 lumps though the VTS lumps just a more modern version of them and is a straight fit

you can still get a few low miles 1.9 gti engines and go in pretty easy and tune up quite nice but yeah i agree the vts are good engines

With a new one you could get lucky and buy a minter, but its very possible youll buy a dog thats been prettied up for sale. Lot of my mates have had that happen, and not stupid mates either.

yea exactly i think i mite av ad similar wit mine i know myself its not working to its 100% way but i can live wit that atm untill i get cash n stuf n wit a new engine jus put in it i know where i stand then if a pro or sumone like yaself was to do it n knows all there shit, and i think if i was to do it im not one to do it half done id do it prperly n change belts/ tensioner and idle jusso i know its all good like, plus im planning on spraying the bottom part of my car the gun metal grey colour ya see on some vtrs cos imo they look sweet so i wanna keep the silver i got lol

Cant afford it all....damn it.

Fair play, its deffo the way to do it just whacking an engine you know nowt about is asking for trouble. Cool, that would look great on a MK1 Ive never seen it on anything other than a MK2 before.

Could do it for £250 plus petrol money to yours if necessary which will be no more than £25 at the very most :) Can also get all servicing parts and assemblies before I leave at trade price, so will be very cheap.

That part you can never be fully sound on, theres always an element of risk. But you can reduce that risk by buying from the right people, adverts with little to no info are a no go. If they can confidently answer every question you have youve got a good chance its a good one. Plus as youll be rightly changing the timing belt etc anyway theres not an awful lot that dcan go wrong after that. Like I said I can help you source one when the times comes :y:

Cheers matey :drink:. And yeah that would be fine with me too,when you thinking of doing it? Your about 80 miles from me which is cool, would probs cost me 30 in petrol.

Both will have to be sorted out in advance, Im free a lot at the moment but thats because of the rebuild, when thats done Ill be getting my job back and starting Uni again soon too so will have to make sure theres a date we can work with :)

Will only take me a weekend, possibly even just a day if all goes well and nothings overly seized up, to get the conversion done.

oh jus one last thing how would i go about insuring it? would you jus fone ya insurer ya with now or would ya jus search for as new insuerer and find betta price classing the vehicle as a 1997 vts or would i haveto tell them it was a 97 vtr but now a vts?? bit confused see lol

Year doesnt change mate, its still the same year of original registration that counts.

Hes got all the blue hoses (spoox i think) and chrome bits in his engine bay. Hes got leather interior on the inside, and outside is pretty much standard. So its a beast under the bonnet, subtle and luxury inside and standardish on the outside. I'm currently spraying his morrettes for him.
