I got a vtr cylinder head conning this week wanting to do some work on it I'm going to put a Newman ph3 cam in, just wondering what other things I can/ should do to the head ad in like skimmed etc. Cheers.

if the heads not warped then skimming it for no reason can be stupid long term. It gives you less metal to play with if you ever have a HG failure and warping.

so be careful if spending on alot of headwork you dont reduce the margins for failure

Okay thanks mate, what can I do to it for bit better performance?

I had a similar head of AX Gti (1360cc) had it skimmed for better compression! If you ask the engineer to take off a bit but not too much just in case you need to re-skim in future.
Porting will help a lot! They will know what to do. Otherwise once done map the ecu!

For what it'd cost to skim & port a head properly you could buy/fit a 16v and have more power.

already bought a head! i was thinking about getting a vts engine in but insurance is more... ive been getting prices from people to fit a vts lump to much for my liking

A lot of people on here have done a vts conversion if you`ve got mates to help you all the better(cuts down costs)& you learn about car mechanics at the same time.:y:

I wouldn't spend out on expensive head work when you are only running ph3's and a pretty standard setup. you will not get rewarded much for your outlay

tbh, unless your going turbo or supercharger the gains really arent worth it, on a good boosted set up you can see 20-40bhp from good headwork(depending on the head to start with)

but even on a very expensive tb set up youd be lucky to get 10bhp, does help somewhat with power curve etc, but as adam said its not worth it in your case

plus ppl dont often realise that saxo heads really arent that bad flowing to begin with :y:

I know what your saying, cheers for the advice looking in to 16v it!? just thinking about few things like driveshafts & vtr box can you use them with the vts engine? & a non vtr/s drivers side mount?? & the vts transmission mount? Can you just clear up on if i need them bits etc? Cheers.

My head came today, What head work can i do?? Port & polish? Sensible things really dont want to go ott with the head, would it be better to get new vaulves & springs or not??

Search to see what people have done to there engine and what mods are good, take your time doing it. I have a VTR with ported and polished head and kentcam and when that was done the price would be the same as a vts conversion, so do your research before you go ahead m8.

tbf just giving it a little skim would probably be worth it you never know when it might go so might as well give it a skim while its off. saves you money for the future

I agree 100% with Dan! Skim it whilst you can! you can certainly gain out of it!

Just clean it all up as best you can, replace anything thats worn or damaged and have it skimmed if needs be.
If you insist on having headwork done, have it done by someone reputable, there's a lot of cowboys about. A poorly worked over head can produce significantly less power than a standard one.

Cheers for advice guys, I dunno if the valves and other stuff will need replacing or not if there not to expensive then I'll do it I don't want to go Ott with it so I'm thinking port and polished, skimmed and maybe replace valves and springs etc the get the ph3 cam in and ashystable pulley

rebuilding a head with all new parts and valves is by no means cheap mate, but it depends on what your going for, if its just mildly tuned, eg cams and a striaght through,i wouldnt bother with new valves and p&p, just give it a good clean and replash perishable parts

Im using it for road use i dont want to go ott with the head so all i was thinking was skimmed & port & polish then stick cam in and pulley on? but just want someone to say if i will need to replace aulves etc?! Or say what you would recomend to change? cheers.
