i hear alot about when you place a green cotton or raceland induction to your car, you only have 2 holes for the air to go through? is this true and how could you go about it to get more air through, im after performance and want the best induction

cheers

Basically the enclosed filter like the one below

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i277/turpin2000ad/RaceLandEnclosedInduction.jpg

is feed through two tiny holes in the slam panel, thats one of the main reasons I went from my Green enclosed

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i277/turpin2000ad/SaxoVTS16v8.jpg

to a 106 S16 open filter with a heat shield as below

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i277/turpin2000ad/SaxoVTS16v15.jpg

I personally thought the Open filter was better from the off and at low to mid revs under hard accelration but I will admit that I did go back to the Green scoop after about 4 or 5months because the pick while on the move was much better with the Scoop which I think I put down to heat soak problems.

I found by spacing the Scoop slight away from the slam panel so it wasnt flush with it more air could enter the scoop there by improving the scoops performance.

You could go at the slam panel with a angle grind or heavy metal cutting shears but I chooce not to do this as I wasnt sure what this would do to the slam panels strength in the case of a smash, last thing I wanted to do is make it weaker in a crash but its up to you.

Hope that helps

I just fitted one for the vts on my furio (needs modifications to fit tho)

Check out my progress thread for pics and details:y:

I doubt the slam panel is a major stutural piece so i would cut it slightly to get better airflow. If its anything like a 205 it will be held on by two small bolts that would just sheer in an accident. The only point I can see of these is to hold your bonnet catch mechanism in place.

jigsaw a bigger hole out of it, in a crash it will be the least of you worries, a bean can is probly stronger than the saxo shell

^^ so true, but we like to think thats its not so stop reminding us:p

but atleast if you cut abit of it, you stil have a slight panel going accross so you could have abit (not much) force taken away from the engine and shell?

cheers for all your help guys

Thanks Saunders, thats the reason I mentioned it - Yes its easy to cut bigger holes in the slame panel and Yes the slame panel wont save your life on its own, but I did feel it important just to point out that its upto you whether you cut the slame panel and by doing do you are weakening it.

Christ even if the slam panel was a iron gurder it wouldnt save your life in a Saxo :p but I felt it was important enough to to mention, as I mention to everbody about decats will fail a MoT - We all know that but its worth mentioning ;)

strutural points on the chassis will be welded or will have bloody big bolts/nuts etc. Look at the ones used for your engine mounts, suspension, seat belt points etc and then look at the puny 9 or 10 mm bolts holding the slam panel on.

so final verdict is.... is it worth the drill/cutting of the slam panel for what extra bhp/performance i woul

Definatly don't bother drilling or cutting the slam panel, your probably looking at a couple of BHP at a push, but coupled with an exhaust system you may see more

the gains will be minimul anyway. if your hardcore then cutting away is the thing to do. i was gonna, never got round to it and my scoop is twice the size as the one above

Ive been putting up with a little crappy standard scoop for ages, then redirected to below the front bumper - But still just crap!! So i think saturdays job is remove front bumper and have a blast.

It wont add anything big to performnce but the little fings always help, even more so on breathing. Prob will find a little differenceat higher speeds for the simpl fact of more air at that speed anyway.

Cutting the slam panel has already been done.

Ill be doing it to mine aswel at some point, but whereas this ones been left cut im going to restrengthen with a metal bar going across the bottom point of where its been cut with another supporting bar running from the middle where the bonnet lock is onto the horizontal bar below it.

Thatll pretty much give full and maximum air intake from a feed such as the procomp one for example.

Red line shows where the 2 supportive bars will be welded, theyll probably be in an L shape as opposed to a straight | which is stronger

To be honest two cars of similar condition, age and state of tune one with a drilled slam panel and one without, I wouldnt imagin that slightly better air flow into the airfilter would really give the first car with the drilled panel would out perform the other but the choice is yours.

It is true every little helps but sometimes too little wont do anything at all
