OK today i fitted my newman camshafts. They are PH2(Phase 3 inlet, Phase 1 exhaust). Standard timings for now i will test some advance or retard tomorrow to see how it will be. The car lost alot of low-down power and is better in the higher revs. The idle is perfect almost like before. The car is still not remaped so i hope see more power in low-down revs and more in the higher. Tomorrow will fit straight pipe 55mm with just one silencer. I think the compression ratio must be rised for better torque and some more ponies :) Thats it for now.

Is there some guide for cam timings? I want to retard the cams a little bit for better low-down.

I wouldn't even bother until you get the car on the rollers. Then the mapping and cam timing adjustment can begin...

I have to adjust the timing to make more comfortable power band and then mapping. I don't want maximum peak power. I want better power curve.

Firstly, they should have come with settings. Did they? Secondly, you won't know what's going on with the power until you get it mapped. The mapping will consist of tweeking the timing anyway.

They are fitted with standard timings.

OK, so you need them dialled in... Contact the seller for the info. Where are you planning on getting the mapping done?

the guidde for cam timing is on the newmans site. where it says the amount of lift at tdc, you will need to use dial gauges to set the amount of valve lift at tdc.

We set the standard timings is that wrong?

Yes, you need to advance / retard them as per the newmans website.

Do you have some idea how many degree's need to be advance/retard because i am doing it by myself :)

Look at Williams' post above, lol.

I don't have timing disc so if it's possible to give some orientation how much to rotate the verniers and in what direction.

contact newmans for a disc or buy one, standard marks will work but low on power, and also without a remap its pointless as fueling will be all over the place and wont be good in the longrun. Changing something as radical as cams has a large impact on the car so needs setting up correctly immediatly.

Sounds nice in that vid!

Nice idle...

use a DTI on top of the lifters to set the correct amount of lift.

nassso
30th July 2007, 06:24
What is DTI? :) The car have alot of increase of performance in 1st and 2nd gear absolute no traction the car goes like mad in first gears. I hope to see good increase after the remap.

Very interested in seeing what these's are like when the car is mapped!!!!

I'll watch this one;)

You shouldn't see any increase without a re-map, it's just not possible. Well, minimal gains...

nassso

Probably a miracle ;)

Placebo more likely... ;)

Not quite true, You will see some gain, but to get the full potentioal out of the cam a remap is required.

Cloud has a black mk1 vtr (90bhp) with head work and cam and its been rolling roaded at around 120bhp and it hasnt been maped just had fuel tweeked

Sorry, that's cods. He wouldn't even gain that much with a re-map... lol Having the fuel adjusted is the core of a re-map, so I don't know what you mean by that.

nassso

What kind of headwork? Probably skimmed? Rising the compression is the key to get best power from camshafts.

+ ignition timing, rev limit raised and cam timing.

Well get it done, you should see another 20 bhp...

Finally remaped but not on dyno yet. The results are very impressive, i don't know what kind of power is but the car pulls like train. We've made the maximum advance for 10.8 compression ratio and 100 octane petrol. We still have some problems with the idle but will be fixed soon. The rev limiter is at 7800rpm. The next step is head porting and skimming to make the compression ratio 11,5:1 and then remap on the dyno. Also my car is with standard manifold and pipes just removed cat and cold air intake.

Good stuff chap.
