Default Very Difficult Situation (crime related)

I don't often post in this section but I really need some help! It's a bit of a long one so bear with me..

A few months ago my girlfriend moved in with me and at the same time my house mate who works with me moved away for 6 weeks to live/work elsewhere. She intended to come back after this period so we charged her half rent and let her keep stuff in her room. A few weeks after my girlfriend moved in the was a robbery and only a few things were stolen - all belonging to my girlfriend. Her laptop in it's bag with charger etc (also in the bag was her Sony camera with it's case) and her mp3 player. My girlfriend came home to find the window open and some shit from the shelf scattered into the kitchen sink. The police came round and looked at the scene, said there was no footprints on the outside wall, inside, and the only fingerprints were later found to be mine. None of my stuff was touched, we assumed it was too shabby/they didn't hang around long enough to find my DSLR etc.

She had no insurance so no claim was made and we forgot about the whole thing. My work mate later claimed to have come back to pick up some stuff that day, seen the window open but not realised that there had been a break in.

A couple of months have passed but on Saturday my girlfriend was cleaning up outside in the shed and found her camera case and Sony memory stick adapter in the house mates possessions. We were gutted as we've all been getting on so well and didn't know how to tackle it so went to the Police so that they could at least search her shit to see if anything else was around.

They interviewed her and she has no explanation. She said that her friend found the camera and case in her car one night when she was driving drunk people around after a party. She thought that one of the girls had left it there and tried to find the owner with no luck. They asked her where the camera was and she said she left it with the case but it's nowhere to been seen.

The Police are convinced it was her and trying their best to press charges. My girlfriend is distraught and also believes it was her but wishes it wasn't. I was also convinced but spoke to my house mate today for the first time since the Police have been involved and she seems very sincere and upset by it all. She accepts that she will probably be charged and fined, and doesn't blame us for going to the Police. She also said that in the same poisition she wouldn't believe it either.

I've known her since christmas and lived together since March. We've always got on very well and she seems like a decent honest person. Her Dad is also a prison warden. She doesn't seem to have any money/drug problems although we aren't sure of her past and there are some rumours flying around work.

Obviously I want justice to be done, equally I don't want the wrong person to be charged. It seems pretty clear cut from an outside perspective, but when one of you're best mates looks you straight in the eye, balling her eyes out and says "I didn't do it", it's hard not to believe them.

I hope to god that she can prove she didn't do it and this will all be forgotten, but somehow I don't think the cops will buy it, and I don't know if my girlfriend will tell them not to press charges. She is still 'living' with us althought we've been avoiding her whilst the Police got their shit together and talked to her.
