Default air sensor help

when i got the car the air sensor in the airbox was missing (didnt no till i see pics on here)

its the one some people leave hanging down the back when thay put induction kits on (some drill it in to tb hose)
cars been fine without it,

had the mot today it it fail badly on co % vol (should be 0.30 mines4.51)

if i got a sensor will it fix it ?

my thinking is that if it cant tell how much air is going in then its fueling as much as it wants,

has anyone had an mot without the sensor?
i dont what to replace sensors and it not fix it

yea it will fix it as it measures how much fuel it actually needs to mix with the air coming in.
For it to fail emissions it will be running heavy on fuel.
