gearbox is being a pig to fit!
hi guys ive got a westie and my gearbox was nackered so i got the missus to take me to bristol to pick up a new 1, when removing the gearbox i thought it would of been a good idea to replace the clutch, now i havent got a alignment tool but i have lined it up with a very steady eye, i still think for £9 it would pay to get clutch alignment tool, i tried to fit the gearbox but its being a pig and wont line up at the bottom, i have thrown alot of fucks into my car today because of it and am not in the best mood lol, can any1 else tell me what i might be why its not lining up properly? Cheers Lee

you mean the input shaft on the gearbox then
if you can borrow an allighnement tool get one but msot of the time you can get it in by eye, you can also use the driveshaft to line it up
try some copper slip on the splines of the gearbox input shaft then try again, it will eventually go in with a bf wrestling and id also employ someone to operate the jacks and get under the car and you over the top of box to jiggle it in

well im gathering that its the input shaft that is stopping me from gettin it lined up properly, i cant see what else it would be if there is anything else? surely it must just be that the clutch isnt lined up properly to the input shaft?

an inch gap may indicate the clutch plate isnt alligned properly, you usually get one with a valeo kit, bit of plastic, its perfect for alligning it, or you can always go to halfords bu use it then take it back, not sure of an excuse but you should get a refund

if you havnt got an alignment tool then use somthing the same diameter as the input shaft end, i think i used a marker pen with some tape wraped around it works every time for me try that mate

Vtr clutch release bearing.
Can anyone confirm that a 106 gti clutch release bearing is the same as the saxo VTR? Cheers.

how are you doing it? if the cars on axel stands and your lifting the box off the floor into place from the top then its just really awkward to line it up. the first time i did it it took me hours!

Lining up the box is hard if you arent muscle man, the first time me and my dad did it with a jack and then just jiggled it around from the underneath until it went in. The next time I did it I lifted the box up with an engine crane and it made the job so much easier, instead of taking ages to line it up did it within 15 mins.
If your still having probs lining up the clutch make sure you haven't bashed the splines trying to force it in, this happened on my Mg's clutch and it took some time to realise what had happened!
