Whats the law say about?
Whats the law on putting a car for sale in a layby, with signs in the window's?
I know the car has to be taxed, moted and insured, but is there a time limit the car is aloud to sit in the layby?(the road dosent have any lines or signs saying about parking ect.)
The only reason i ask is because a friend had a car for sale in a layby and a buyer said that police were there and wrote down all the phone numbers from the for sale signs and the copper said they must be all moved or they will be taken away.My mate did have a few missed calls from a withheld number but no voicemails .I think the bloke was just talking shit trying to get money off the car by saying "you will have to move it soon you might aswell sell it quick to me and i can give x amount for it".
Has anyone heard that you are not aloud to sell cars in layby's or been told about this before by the police?
Cheers for any help.

I have a similar issue at the minute. People parking cars and putting them up for sale outside my factory. The cars are complete sheds, have no road tax and chances are no insurance. Most of the time they block my access and make it very hard for HGV's to get to me.
So i phoned the police, they came and had a look and all they said was......this is not a matter for the police, sorry we cannot help you.

Call the DVLA James. They have that road tax hotline thingy. They'll be round with a low loader straight away if they are on public property

i think u can only have 3 cars for sale in a certain distance but leaving a car on its own for sale isnt a crime if its docs are in order

Their is a "County Bylaw" that restricts where a vehicle can be sold and the distance from the point of sale. Unfortunatly it is only a police matter if the vehicle is their for longer than 7 days, to which an abandon notice is served.
Before that, it is a county council responsiblity to pursue any issue with vehicles being sold in a manner that is deamed a nuisance...

IT IS illegal to offer goods sale by the road side unless you have a street trading licence but it really depends on where you live as to how the police and council will act
some ignore some deal with it instantly ans some only if there are complaints
ie its a nuisance or as above its a complete shed and its a trader who doesnt want to admit they are

Ahh you need to word it correctly to the police. Guy a work had a similar problem. If the cars are causing an obstruction and you cant physically move around the cars and you need to get out NOW then they can do something about it, otherwise they'll say its a council problem and the council wont give a shit.

Sure its illegal if you have more than 3 cars for sale on the road side, as that technically make you a trader, and should therefore be paying rates. However, with 1 or 2 cars it may be different, because all you are doing really is parking. So as long as the cars or road legal if on public property then it should be ok.
James, if they are untaxed the DVLA will eventually shift them. Least they will be gone after 7 days. Or you could just 'accidently' reverse one of the artic's through them one at a time. Sure the owner will soon shift them
