Default new to photography.

never really been intrested in photography until me and the missus went on holiday to egypt and had some pics done out there. they were amazing for the money.
they was using Nikon D90's i think.

so when we got back i was like i want i want.
But didnt do any research and bought one of the cheepest camera's i could find.

I ended up with a Nikon D3000 with the 18-55mm VR af-s lens.

Not had a play with it yet, so any pointers to look out for.
As i said im new to all of this so any help is much appreciated.

And is it a good camera to start off with?

Thanks in advance
Stu

nikons are good mate I have a few lenses now if you want a wide angle lense sigma are good...

try it out on auto mode first it takes a while to get used to shutter speeds ect..
but once you the hang of it use the a mode you can slow evrythig down and take some cool photos... good luck..

check my vts thread theres a picture of a pier i took using a simular camera likes yours

ive ordered a sigma lens also, i hope to be doing some motorsport shots so needed a zoom lens. (my uncle does stock car racing so get in for free)

i think its the 70-200mm lens ... not 100% sure though

thats a bonus

havent used a sigma zoom lens but my wide angle pictures come out perfectly clear so you should get some good shots.... i'd use the shutter mode for those sort of pictures and have the highest shutter speed that way they wont turn out all blury

Why buy an SLR if you are going to use auto?

Only modes you should use that are part auto are shutter and apperture priority, then when you know a camera Manual.

motorsport you dont want the highest shutter speed possible, else the car looks parked and you dont have movment, see the FAQs i wrote a guide
