Default Traveling to France

I'm thinking of going to France later on in the year, but my passport has expired, can you travel on photo ID ie. Driving lisence or do you need a valid passport?

Also any recomendations of somewhere cheap but warm and a decent beach for abit of a chill holiday, thinking of camping or something.

Cheers, Ryan.
