Default Need a new CV Joint can you buy them?

I just phoned a couple of my local motor factors and they are all saying that you cant get a new CV joint has to be a new DS, yet my mate with a GTI managed to get one and change it for that ?
Is this true ? do i have to get the whole driveshaft!

Ive replaced a few cv's on my old saxo, Its a pain in the arse as you need to completely split the shaft to change. Your better off getting a replacement shaft mate.
