I have always paid it as it doesnt seem in increase my premium much.

If it was alot more im not sure i would bother.

Am i right in thinking the cover is for legal help if you do something illegal? or is it if you run someone over etc.

Its legal help in general, although as with most things, doing things that arnt illegal in the first place helps.

Definitely worth it in my opinion. So much so that I think that legal cover is the main reason for having insurance. If you want to make a claim and the third party disputes it, paying for my own legal representation would a) probably not worth the hassle and b) cost more than the damage in the first place.

Most of the times when you have an crash, someone will claim liability so there is no need for legal action etc.
If either party disputes the claim, thats when legal cover pays for itself.
I would rather pay an extra £15 a year for them to provide me with legal cover than a shit load for a solicitor if I had to go to court myself.
Its only £15 a year, even if you never ever use it
The one year you decide not to have it, you can see what will happen....sods law

Look at it this way. You pay for legal cover, have a crash, you're not at fault and the solicitor recovers your costs.

You don't have legal cover, you have a crash where you're not at fault, employ a solicitor, win, recover all your costs and you are no worse off. In fact you are better off because you haven't paid for legal fees at all

i didn't have legal over when i was 17 as it saved me 100 notes. A smack head on a push Bike came through a red light and smashed into me. He tried to sue me for damages for his bike and loss of earnings "couldn't walk to collect job seekers". I had to pay all legal costs and the cost of my legal team in the end it cost me just short of 2k. So IMO well worth it as when you have it you just post everything to your insurance and they sort it without you spend days on the phone and pay out of your arse for legal representation.

its ok saying you can recover the costs but if the person who has no assets to claim against i.e.... doesn't own the car and has no job and house. you have nothing to claim against so you are left high and dry and out of pocket.

Reading your other post, if you have a police statement where the third party admits fault then it may be worth persuing further.
