Cars of today, classics of tomorrow?? General thoughts thread
Morning all, as per the title really, following a recent conversation.
Are there really any modern day cars out there (for argument sake after the Saxo/106 production era) that you'd expect to be a future classic with a decent following?
By this I mean not just a car to own and admire but one that can still be easily tinkered with by the masses. We've all loved the relative ease of getting our handy dirty on a saxo/106, the simpleness to do just about anything with a fairly basic knowledge for most.
But with new cars being so ridiculously complex with crazy electrics for everything and computers operating other random bits, will the appeal for DIY modding die off?
Post your thoughts below :-)

Without blowing my own trumpet..
The Honda Integra DC2 - 'Best FWD Drivers Car' so evo mag and a few others say. Its got a very good reputation as a drivers car. Theyre not that common either. 2 of the reasons I bought the Teg, and it will become a modern day classic
Focus RS
Also I think the idea of tinkering with bits will die off. Its wht the EU or VOA would want anyway so its working in their favour without them enforcing any rules I guess. Modern cars seems quite capable as they are, so just a remap can add some powahhh. Chassis wise things will also be tinkeralble. maybe not to the extent of sax's though.

M3 CSL
M3 GTS
M3 GT
E30 M3
DC2
clio trophy
R26r
mini JCW GP
Evo tommy mak
106 rallye / 306 rallye
any special model / rare 'performance' car really...
the reason i think 106's / saxos won't be counted as future classics is because it's so hard to find a near standard one, just a mint OEM example which can actually be counted as a classic.
that being said... how many OEM minis are there? not many
Modern cars don't really have the appeal of future classics, but i bet people thought that when the 205 came out, 20 years later however and the view changed vastly...

I agree with Ashley, a classic is usually a car that in mint condition that represents the car when it left the showroom.
Add this with being a drivers car to make it a modern day classic status, it dosent need anything doing to it to make it capable or excell at something, whether its power, handling, rarety etc.
So this means it dosent matter so much about whether cars can be tinkered with or not to the same level as previous generation of cars. I know you're not saying it DOES matter btw

I disagree with the Focus RS, purely because they are common as fook, also all these Ford Bummers automatically assume because it has an RS badge its instantly a future classic???
The Focus RS is far from the Sierra and Escort's from back in the day, i saw so many of these Horrible Lime Green things on the Motorway coming back from Holiday last week.
As far as future classics from today's more modern cars its hard to say, personal choices are
Honda NSX
Alfa Romeo GTV (Cup)
Fiat Coupe Turbo

If that was the case, surely the 205gti would be in the same boat though? There arent exactly loads of standard ones around.
and i would say the saxo allready has a reputation as the "boy racer" car of its generation, which im sure in the future will stay with it!

In general, i just don't think theres many cars special enough to be a classic... I may be proved wrong in a decade.
It's not a bad thing though, it means competition is close and that all manufactuers are on a similar par meaning many great cars are being produced for us

Quite a few standard 205's around actually. theyre very pricey in good condition OE form.
Not many saxo's knocking around in perfect OE form, and even if there were, theyre not seen as anything special - most people certainly don't look twice. perhaps 10 years down the line that view will be different.
Only way the saxo can acheive classic status is from loeb and the WRC.

fully agree on the lotus front
but will have to disagree on the M badge. Every M car will always be special to a select few in the know / with sentiment, but declared a classic to the masses is reserved for a select few M cars, the F10 / E60 / E36 / e46 (minus the CSL) / e92 (non comp) certianly wouldn't be considered anything special in the grand scheme of things IMO for the simple reason theyre so readily avaliable.

Yeah yeah fair point, i allways thought if the saxo vts had been called a gti, it would have had a much better name for it, no mortals know what vts means (which is a good thing really!)
Also, my vts is completely standard... allmost.

The thing is, they're absolute monsters compared to normal focus'se's which is what makes them stand out so much. Years down the line everyone will have forgotten about 09 plate titanium zetec's but surely will still remember the bright green RS.

Wouldn't say a big following for them, but clean examples are getting harder to find these days, and the few that are left command a premium.
They also didn't use them in BTCC.

I've always thought the 106 is the more known / sought after car than the saxo.
I think the rallye could acheive classic status, even then, seldom do you see a mint standard one.
regarding the RS, it's not special enough to be a classic. to be a classic a car must be fairly groundbreaking in it's field, or have won various race series.
thats the reason the E30 M3, mk1 escort, scoob, evo are so well known, they led the way in the series they were homologated for.
the RS is just another hot hatch which is slower than it's main competitor...

my bad, i thought they were in the BTCC.
in that sense, i guess that would make them similar to the E36 M3. it'll never be considered a classic to the masses, but will always hold sentiment for a select few people.
I guess thats how the saxo will end up to...

Surely the same goes for VXR's Type R's etc etc??, Also your forgetting the ST Focus which imo isn't a million miles off the RS.
I just dont understand all this Hype over the FRS
R26R Would be a better shout imo.

Mk1 Focus RS will have more of a following than the Mk2 RS.
Same reason a mint S1 ERST will be worth more than a mint S2 ERST.
Sierra Cosworth also.

I agree with that, the thing is the MK2 Focus is the same as the new Nissan GTR, its the latest thing to have for all these rich boys and Drug dealers and so on, they will drive these until the "Next big thing" comes around.
Much the same as the Audi Q7, Audi R8's etc.
