Default 1.1 Desire brake options

I just picked up a old (2000) 1.1 desire for £150 as a little run around

It's quite refreshing to own a car cost next to nothing to run. It doesn't drink fuel like there is a whole in the tank, it's very cheap insure and the service items are next to nothing. The complete service kit (oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs and semi syn oil) was only £36

But I'm finding the brakes poor, Vague or Wooden would be closer to the mark.

They work but it takes along time to slow down and don't inspire confidence.

I'm not new to modding cars (Owned Imprezas for the last 12 years) and have always looked at upgrading the brakes and suspension but these as standard for such a small car are just rubbish.

I've tried all of the the big brake kits in the past(Ap, Brembo, KSport), My current setup is Porsche 6 pots, Ap355mm disc with pagid yellow pads but don't think this car warrants spending that kid of money.

The car is on a X reg and I believe is a mark 2 by having the sticker in the door jam and using the crappy oil filter insert. It is on the standard steel 14" wheels and these are the 4 bolt type. I haven't taken the wheels yet but I would assume the pads are either cheap OEM copies or near the end of life and that the discs are either shot or the solid disc type

What are my options?

Better pads? Please recommend some, I've tried nearly all of them on the impreza's but always open to advice, what works on one car might not on another.

Brakes from another model? which have bigger calipers, vented discs and bigger discs, Can I retain the standard steel wheels(Tyres are all new) with this option

If these are the solid disc, Can I fit vented instead

Just fit 106 GTI/Saxo VTS/VTR front brakes. Simple bolt on job, takes about 20 mins to do both sides and bleed.

They are slightly larger, vented and bigger calipers with cooling fins. Makes the brakes much lighter.

No you cannot replace the solid discs with vented, vented is too wide for the valiper and new pads. that would make no difference anyway as it's not heat build up which makes 1.1 brakes crap it's just generally all round crap.

I was thinking along the VTR caliper line as these can be had for peanuts on ebay. So thats sorted, What about pads?

Also can these be used with the standard steel 14" wheels.

Theres a set of vtr calipers going for free in the freebie section.

You need the carrier bolts too. Id just go for oem mintex pads and discs on the vtr brakes they should be fine for you.

Yes they fit under your 14's.

The overall disc diameter isnt any bigger than your 1.1 but the caliper pistons are larger, the pad surface islarger and the discs are vented

Many thanks, just priced it all up and even with brembo discs and pads the whole lot comes in for £80 delivered.

I'll sort out a set off ebay, This site won't let me view the for sale section until i've been here for a month (It's a good idea to stop the scammers posting) but it stops the genuine buyers from looking
