Default Another vtr project in portsmouth

HI GUYS AND GALS,

so I bought myself a 'Y' Reg MK2 VTR in blue which at first was a great buy for £260 with a bit of Tax and MOT.

so then I gave a bit of TLC and found a nasty surprise ...

After removing the fusebox to investigate further I found the true extent of the damage ....

SOOOO after thinking to myself "that's ok ill just get it repaired" I took the car for a Pre Mot ... just to find out the VTR was a shed, the mechanic stated the rust was also under the ecu, there was something called a radius arm snapped at the rear and the other was damaged it needed new driveshafts wheel bearings and wishbones aswell as supposedly an odd noise coming from the gearbox, personally besides the odd bump and creek coming from the body work and the lack of power steering heating and rear demister I thought the engine and gear box were spot on and very strong.

so with the news I had just got I went to find another VTR to build and lo and behold tucked in a salvage yard there she was, all £300 worth ...

I began to swap bits over from the now donor car including mirrors, parcel shelf, front grill, aerial, radio, battery and rear lights all is going well until I come to swap the rear view mirror..... it pops off the blue car fine but come to refit it in the red vtr and F**K this happened....

This is as far as I have got so far so once I get to do more I shall add updates accordingly I still have to swap fuel pump to get red VTR starting and now sort out a replacement windscreen aswell as remove and refit induction and exhaust system.

Any hints and tips welcome and appreciated !!

For future reference do a bit of research on here and you would have seen the common problems is rust under the ECU and fusebox and rear axle problems.

That being said the red one has potential with a good clean up, anything other than the fuel pump stopping it starting? Nice to see someone else from Portsmouth.

hi jigs

yeah I made a newbie mistake lol

as far as im aware theres nothing stopping red one starting besides the fuel pump as its missing so im taking the blue one

the nice thing about the red one is its unmolested besides a Clifford alarm being fitted so I got a nice solid base to start work with

Yeah it looks decent, good colour too. What scrapyard is that? Doesn't look like any local one round here?

ok so a small update is due ....

I have now received my logbook for the red vtr and all is clear so that's a bonus.

also I have now rewired the radiator fan in aswell as the fuel pump and fitted the battery again so I now have a running car.

I have also swapped over the wheels and had the windscreen replaced aswell as fitting the rear lights and a set of angel eyes

and I have my MOT booked for Friday

Here are a couple of Pics of the angel eyes

Just fitted

Sidelights

Dipped Beam

Main Beam

Feedback welcome as ever ??

ok gang so the result is as follows ....... FAIL !!!!!

ok but doesn't seem major just silly niggly bits besides the brakes ..

results are as follows .....

001 - offside headlamp not working on dipped beam

002 - (both lamps) headlamp aim too low

003 - Nearside side repeater not working

004 - (both blades) windscreen wiper does not clear the windscreen effectively

005 - spare wheel carrier insecure

006 - (main) steering rack gaiter split

007 - offside (fowling rim ( REPAIRED ) ) brake cable insecure

008 - (insecure to floor) parking brake lever, pawl mechanism pivots or their associated mountings are insecure

009 - rear (joint) exhaust has a major leak of exhaust gases

010 - Parking brake: efficiency below requirements - 9%

advisory

011 - Rear discs showing corrosion

so as you can see nothing to serious although I am confused as to what the mean by the parking brake lever insecure as it feels solid to me ?? ... the exhaust is probably my fault as I probably didn't tighten it properly when fitted new back box and the rest well that's just bulbs and wipers.

they did manage to do emissions test which it passed also

so what do you guys think ???

ok so I haven't been here a while as been busy with other ventures but here is an up date to the vtr.

it is currently still off the road as it failed its retest on brake bind and only 13% handbrake efficiency.

so I stripped the calipers bought a refurb kit and new pistons and cables and am currently in the process of replacing all these also replaced the steering rack gaiter

only niggly non mot issue I have is temperamental starting issues ... basically if I put fuel in it fails to start then the battery goes flat ... jump start and works first time then will be fine leave it a few days try to start it ..... wont start !!!!

any ideas ??

I have a spare coil pack, alternator, starter etc from the donar car if required but don't know where to start
