it reduces the rotational mass of the engine which improves throttle responce.

Does it reduce the power lost between engine and wheels?

Right chappies, basically lightening and balancing are a way of getting more rpm and power from the engine. The added advantage is that it also adds to reliability and smoothness. and the best part of it is that its pretty simple to do, which means you could do most of the work yourself if you hav some knowledge and it don't cost a fortune.

I’m also after an answer for this? Some RR figures if anyone’s got them?

If it improves throttle response it will improve in gear acceleration too?

I cant remember where I read it but it was on a web page for a tuning company I’m sure they claimed that taking a few kgs from the flywheel would give the same effect as having one less passenger.
To me this seams like quite a reasonable claim as the flywheels not only being accelerated laterally but also it’s got an angular acceleration all the way up to 7250rpm?
Similarly taking a few kgs from the wheels will have a far greater effect than taking a few out the boot, although not as much as the flywheel as they are only being accelerated at a fraction of the speed?

Also the clutch and gearbox. I’m sure I’ve seen a 4 speed box for sale for a saxo somewhere…

Has anyone got any of these mods:

Lightweight flywheel,
4speed box,
Lightweight clutch,
Lightweight wheels and tyres

And what difference did they make on acceleration and RR figures?

Just found this...

http://www.pumaracing.co.uk/FLYWHEEL.htm

It’s all copyrighted so I can’t copy any of it but it tells you everything about lightening the flywheel.

I’d still like to know what difference it would make on a rolling road though?

And does anyone know how much weight can be removed from a VTS flywheel?

you fitted 106 gti alloys instead of a flywheel? how did you get the gearbox back on?

As said lightening the flywheel allows faster revving but also the engine will slow down quicker too. As a downside it may induce poor idle and easier stalling. Off the top of my head I seem to remember someone mentioning the vts flywheel wasn't heavy enough to warrant it being lightened anyway.

Is that a fact? I'm sure a while ago someone from SSC said 4kg could be removed from a saxo flywheel if so that would make a massive difference.

Spencer - I bet those alloys make a noticeable difference in acceleration!

is what a fact? the fact i seem to remember someone saying it? funnily enough yes it is. Then again if someone on ssc said it then it must be true (even if it was one of the most if not the most technically knowledgeable person on ssc-ratty- who said it wasnt heavy enough to warrant it )
So do you have actually have any concrete technical knowledge to add?

And sarcasm is the lowest form of wit (usually the domain of retards)

Ok then... I don’t know “Ratty” so I wouldn’t know if he’s a reliable source or not but if you say so I’ll take your word for it as I don’t really know the guy who told me 4kg could be taken off either.

If we try and piece together the facts it will help people in the future in deciding whether or not it’s a worthwhile mod.

Maybe 4kg can be taken off but it won’t idle? Or idle very well? There must be some amount that can be taken off even if it’s a small or else why would people get it done?

If anyone reads the article on pumaracing and knows how much mass can be removed on the flywheel it will give them some idea of the effects, even if they aren’t “warrantable” they can make up their own minds id they want one or not.
