Default Few Questions about the Engine Bay!

I had a crack at cleaning my engine bay today and had a few problems.. Just looking for a little advice! Its a W reg VTR.

Took my Rocker cover off and gave that a sand down with some emery cloth and got rid of most of the rust. Gonna get some paint tomorrow for it. Had a real problem getting it back on, anyone else had this? The rubber round the bottom wasn't allowing it back on and if I forced it the 2 spacers would fall out etc.. Was I doing something wrong?

Also the mainfold cover is a mess just wondering if that can be painted up with the same paint as the rocker cover?

Also struggled with cleaning deep down into the engine, gonna pick up some of that GUNK everyone seems to talk about and try that.

Is it safe to remove the felt cover on the underside of the bonnet? Its very tattered and frankly think it would look much better without it!

Battery tray is messed up, really rusty.. What can I do about that?

Read a few of the posts from a quick search and everyone makes it sound so simple. "Cover the electrics, spray GUNK then hose and wipe down" but this wasn't the case for me.. Appreciate any help Yes I don't have much of a clue what I'm doing Cheers!

1) IIRC you'll need a new gasket for the rocker cover - hence it not going back on right.

2) Mani will need to have high temp paint - normal paint will crack and look bad eventually - mani cover gets very hot!

3) I use Autoglym engine cleaner and a stiff-ish paintbrush to clean the engine bay where really dirty

4) the felt cover can go - doesn't make any difference

5) paint the battery tray with hammerite

Thanks for the fast answer mate.. So you reckon 1 tub of silver/grey hammerite or high temp paint would do the manifold, rocker and battery tray? (On a budget )

Sweet I'll get rid of the felt shit! And what do ya mean by a new gasket for the rocker cover? Sorry mate not the most mechanical person

the gasket is the seal between the rocker cover and the head of the engine - to be honest, looking at the state of that cover, i'd just get a new one from citroen - they're only £20ish... I'm getting a new one as a spot of rust has started to appear on the bottom

buy a new manifold cover from peugeot, only £5.

I stugglled with my rocker cover. Inside there is a metal plate. This is what is causing the problem. It will go with spacers and i used my original seal.

This is a peugeot 306 i did this on bt none the less it is the same 1.4 engine

Take the coilpack out behind the rocker cover, makes it much easier.

Try paragonpug on ebay for the manifold cover,if your want the new cover really shiny without painting it then use Autosol on it.
