underpowered vtr
ok, i have a '97 mk1 vtr which is on 66k miles, and my mate has a '00 furio with 14k miles, and in his car manages to pull away from mine
last night on a dual carriageway, we both went side by side at about 30mph in second gear and both floored it at the same time and shifted to third at 6k rpm. in 2nd it was pretty equal, but once in 3rd gear, his furio started to pull away. this shouldn't happen right? if anything i would have thought that it would be my car that just edges it? if it makes much difference, my engine is standard and his only mod is a raceland induction kit.
does anyone know what may be causing my car to lack power? any ideas would be really helpful

best get a full service done on it. Oil, Oil filter, plugs, fuel filter etc.
Probably loads of shit in the fuel filter or the oil is totally black now

i don't though, that's the thing. i usually drive around in like 3rd or 4th trying to save fuel also i usually let the fuel run quite low, so maybe all the crap from the fuel tank is clogging the fuel filter??

erm i had it serviced in april, oil and air filter, oil change, new brake pads all round, didn't get the fuel filter changed though. like i said in my post above, i usually let the fuel run quite low, so do you think i could have clogged up my fuel filter with crap from the bottom of the tank? so it looks like a new fuel filter is in order

its probably down to neglecting the engine

like i said in the first post, his only mod is a raceland inducion kit. as far as i know my engine is in good order, i'm the second owner, it was owned by a woman for 10 years before me, full service history, no major problems in the past. i rarely thrash my car, if i do i make sure it's warmed up first. tbh i rarely go above 3k rpm, i can't afford to waste petrol.

You have said it all if it was owned by a woman and you rarely thrash the car then it will automatically set the ecu to your driving type whats steady away, i would go get some good 10/40 semi synth oil, new fuel filter, a good set of bosch super 4 plugs, some nice super unleaded and injector cleaner in the tank, unplug your ecu and then take it for a run take it to max revs all the way upto 3 rd then give it a good long run at 70 in 5th gear

My mate's Quiksilver was the same when I had my old engine with the early VTR g'box on, swap the gearbox, makes a massive difference, I really dont like the old VTR boxes at all, the ratios are all over the place.

a vtr should pull away from a furio easy! get ur local garage to have a look at it, could be something like your fuel pump on the way out or something, and like stiffler69 said, the ecu normally adjusts to your driving style, my advice is to get some injector cleaner with a full tank of petrol, and rag the tits out of it for a few hours! must admit my car feels a bit quicker since i got it and it was previously owned by a 35yr old woman since it was new!
