Golf GT TDI
Seriously considering getting one of these.....
Getting sick of the smallness of the saxo and would just like something a bit more suitable for site visits etc.....
My question is,
who has one and how do they get on with it? or know anybody with one....
What do people think of them in general?
i have a budget of around 4-5k at a guess for the car, and looking into insurance now...
im after the mark4 will this budget get me a decent one??

PM Ruddy mate.
To get one within your budget, it would be slightly high mileage but if that doesn't bother you. Got any other diesels in mind?
Golfs are very solid, but opt for the 130bhp model if possible.

I was going for 130 due to insurance...is there a reason not to opt for the 150?
I will send him an email to his work when he gets back, think he is on holiday

150 has quite a lot of turbo lag I think, but insurance group is a big jump to like 13 or 14.

As said PM Ruddy , He has the 150 and has it mapped... been out in it and it's pretty damn quick
130's will still be quick if you map them - great MPG and as solid as a rock
Might struggle to find a decent (low milage) one with a 4-5k budget though

ahhh right!!!
the 130 and 150 are both group 13, according to parkers
big step down to the 115 and is group insurance 10 still
i will see what quotes i get...
due to the 130 and 150 being the same insurance group, would the 130 still be the one to opt for ?
cheers mate repped if i can

150's are quite abit more expensive iirc ? And i VERY much doubt you'll get a 3 door for 4-5k

Find it strange how the 130 and 150 are in the same group? I thought the 130 was group 8.
Are you wanting to go VAG?

cheers tupps,
i don't mind having a high mileage one as there good for a lot of mileage anyways...
my budget wont really budge from what it is otherwise will have to take out a real loan!!! fuck that tbh....
Ruddy is the man to ask really as i can find out the step up on insurance from his vtr...
or does anyone know?

Best thing to do is ask Ruddy mate
He went from a vtr to a 150 GT TDI .... 3 door , Silver , not the lowest milage
He'll answer any questions , Shame he's on holiday

3 door or 5 door?
I'd look at Ibiza, Leon to see if you can pick up any bargains - I'd always opt for a Seat over the VW tbh. There are loads of diesels out there I'd suggest, but none are VAG.

Few Ideas mate....
1) Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi 115bhp Edge - 3 door. Pick them up with say 40k on the clock for your budget and Fords are renowned to be a comfortable car - I loved how comfortable my Focus was and my Dad loves his Mondeo.
2) Vauxhall Astra 1.7CDTi SXI/SRI - 3 Door - Again your price range and similar mileage. Good cars and reliable.
I'd recommend french, but I presume you'll want to get away from that.

I'd pick the Focus over the Astra, but then again the Astra has it's advantages.
I know what you mean about the Golfs, I wanted one originally when I set out for a diesel - but it was like £7500 for a Golf on a 02 plate with 77k on the clock or £8500 for my 307 05 plate with 21k on the clock so you can see why I opted for that. Okay, I haven't had best experiences, but that's due to garage messing up. The 307 comes with a LOT toys.

From what I've noticed the higher the BHP the higher the price.
The 130 6-speed model is the one to go for tbh.

True,
I can't see myself in the focus or astra tbh...
had a look and nothing really takes my fancy... i may stay the vag route..
Im worried i will miss the fun of the saxo even more in a focus etc...the golf will take my mind off that i think as i will be happy enough just having one...
