Fines for owning an uninsured car??
Had a quick look, couldnt see a thread with anything to do with this, so thought i would make one.
In the news this week, its been said that it may soon be illegal to OWN a uninsured car. How it is now, its illegal to drive one on the road, but now, even if you have a car sat in the garage, you may be able to be fined just for owning it...
link... http://www.moneyhighstreet.com/finance-news/866/
I think thats just a stupid law if it gets passed, for people taking classics off the road to rebuild them, and people of our generation rebuilding a track car or something, it will need to be insured... Just ridiculous money making scheme tbh.
Discuss.

If people keep their cars on private land purely so they can work on them as a hobby or add them to a collection then they can complete a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN), send it to the DVLA and they will be exempt from paying the car insurance.
|
not sure how it will work with race cars where they've never been registered with the DVLA. Mine certainly hasn't
Not sure how it will help when people don't register the cars they drive with the DVLA or ever get it registered. How about getting more police out on the road pulling people over.

its a load of crap and tbh they cant really implement it too well
its like i currently 'own' 5 cars that are all uninsured
2 of them have been scrapped but i havent informed the dvla yet (i keep meaning to lol)
one has no logbook and is a bare shell so isnt traceable to me on the records untill i pay 25 quid for a logbook
same with lots of classics as they just need an mot to be road legal lots have just dropped off the system but are sat in a garage somewere

but some peoples insurance runs out, and they still have a few months tax, and maybe they cant afford insurance for a few weeks, or a month even, and its more of a ball ache to declare the car SORN, then re-tax it again when you can afford insurance.
Think its just a way to catch people out who arnt insured for a week or something so they can fine them

if it stops all these cocks who drive around uninsured then im all for it.
if u want a project car then declare it off the road, then you dont have to pay tax or insurance.

You can declare it SORN, but can't see the point, with ANPRs being so successful.

just seems another thing that they wont be able to police. Like last year they brought in a law that every kid under a certain hieght had to be in a booster seat. If I had an uninsured car sat in my garage that I never drove I dont think I would be too worried about it
