Default unlocking an ecu

how much of a gain to you get by doing this? and is there much point getting it done, if u are not going to do any major modification to the engine? i already have a magnex cat back system and i am thinking at a later date putting in a de-cat pipe, and i also have a raceland induction kit, will i really motice much difference? and approx prices please, cheers

I wouldn't listen to that friend again if i was you. Unlocking an ecu allows you to use it on a different car. For example, if your ecu was damaged and you needed a new one, you'd buy an ecu off somebody else's car and send it off to be unlocked, which will allow you to use it in your car. Hope this makes sense.

a remap of a standard ecu will give you a small hike in power, but its not cheap. only worth doing if you have a load of mods along with a set of cams ;D

A remap of your ecu will give u gains...depending on what engine mods you have..

An unlocked ecu...wont give any gains at all lol...as said above..normally bought or sent off to be unlocked if your having problems with ur immobiliser and want to bypass it...or if say ur doing a 16v conversion and using the ecu of that car..it will need to be unlocked.

i think wayne at chip wizards remap the standard ecus for over £400. its defo not a cheap process. main reason for unlocking the ecu is to diss-arm the imobiliser. sometimes an engine may come with an ecu but not the keys and barrel for that engine, so you need to unlock your standard ecu to diss-arm the imobiliser and make the chip in the key defunked.
