Default Hello all! Doing a clutch change!

Hello!! new ish member here!!

Just started going about replacing my clutch on a 1.1 98 car....also have a little Elise, so its normally that which requires spannering!! But after 155k the saxo's clutch is fubared.

Im following the haynes, just done the simple bits like downpipe, wheelarch and battery out... but just wondering....

the battery support tray....has a large bolt holding the clutch/gearbox up...can i undo this?!

also....does the starter motor really need to come off?

any advice appreciated!!

....time estimate for completion?!

take a good few hours.
Take the battery tray out for the sake of a 3 10mm bolts.
As i sometimes take hte engine mount off completly to get it off.
Yes you need to take starter motor off. Dont have to undo wires just the bolts to teh gearbox.

ITs fairly straight forward tbh just a pain and have to wrestle the box to get it in and out.

a very rough guide

i was going to do a guide, but its a pain to keep stopping and taking photos.

Basically follow my changing springs guide.

Drain oil, theres a plug in the passenger side of the box.
Then from there, put jack under sump and one under gearbox.
Battery out, intake out.

Nuts off clutch cable. Release it from box.
Disconnect earths from top of gearbox.
Disconnect sensors. 2 or 3 cant remember.
Remove gearlinkages they just pop off if you lever with spanner.
Remove lower engine mount.
Remove manifold to gearbox bolt.
remove fly wheel cover.
remove starter motor
remove battery tray
take bolts from engine to gearbox out 4iirc.
the box will still be attached to the engine as there is dowels.
Make sure you have it jacked. someone underneath holding it encase.
Remove nut from gearbox top mount which is under the battery.
Start lowering the jack under the gearbox slowly.
Pull the box off the side of engine, its a pain in the arse to do
More than likely get wedged on chasis, just have to wrestle it out and slowly lowering jack at the same time.
You dont have to use the jack, but am not the strongest of people.
Once box is off.
There is torx bits holding clutch plate on. Need to wedge the clutch to stop it turning when loostening.
i use a spanner.
Then take nuts out.
Take clutch off.
Put new one on but dont tighten in, use the centering tool to make sure its all centre.
Tighten the bolts diaganally. then nip them slightly then torque them to 20nm diaganally again.

Fitting the box is reversal of removal.

Will need
good tool set and 30 or 32mm socket.
ball joint seperator tool
torx bits that fit a wrench
allen key sockets
hammer
will power
baileys and pizza

few things i missed out. Haynes is a good buy but they make things more complicated then they are.

all going ok!

had a go this afternoon till it was dark and all is out of the way ready to take it out....had an episode locating and removing the starter, made a lot easier once the linkages were snapped out of the way!

just to check...im taking it off at the engine to flywheel joint to take the clutch housing and gearbox off in one, rather than opeing up the the clutch to gearbox joint too?

presumably i dont need to separate the clutch housing from the gearbox

ta!

need to take teh flywheel cover off mate, well the bolt that goes through the manfiold to the gearbox.
So may as wel take it off, plus probs make it a little bit more awkward when sticking the box back on.

Default Clutch change

Hi all!

Just completed a clutch change on my saxo today and im not doing it again!

Getting it all off was easy, getting the gearbox back up with the jack was a job n half.

It took a get few hours and roughly 8 attempts at lining it up. It took 3 people to do this. one person up top holing an using rope to guide the box up, one to support the box generally and one to jack and keep a VERY watchful eye on the gearbox's movements of the jack.

My advice is to not attempt this without the required tools or skill.
