Cos the government needs money, cos they can hide behind enviromental excuses, cos everyone has to pay it. Pick one

Unfortunately, it's yet another method this corrupt government of ours uses to screw even more money out of you. This time under the half-baked guise of environmental issues, ie the more CO2 your car spews out the more you pay.
All well and good but why doesn't road tax take into account usage? My mate has a 2.8L Capri in his garage which he runs 2 or 3 times per month yet he'll pay the same as someone who runs one every day.
Shite!

if you think about it, thats what fuel duty does. You will pay more fuel duty if you drive more, or if your car is less economical.

but road tax is paying for roads to be built and maintained (aparently!), heliosphan's point i'm guaessing is that his mate's capri rarely uses the roads..
