Unhappy Power Steering

I have a problem with the power steering on my saxo, it only works if you tap the pump with a hammer. I have been told there is a valve which is sticking, any suggestions. The car is a 1.5D, P reg.

Hi,

I assume it is an electric pump. If so, the internal carbon brushes are worn. You'll need to get a secondhand pump, a reconditioned one or a new one.
