Default battery - car wont start

hi all,

my gfs car wont start, she says its been playing up recently taking a while to start etc, its a 206 xsi 1.6 16v. 3k until service, and today it wont even turn over. i know for a fact the battery is flat, but is it the cold thats causing the battery to lose charge? she only does short blasts to work and back each day around 7-8 miles a day in total tbh so probs not being re-charged much?

i want to know if the above can cause whats happend, so im not forking out on a new battery if the one shes got is fine.

also what voltages should i see when i measure the battery with a multimeter?

Steve

if your crank is below 9.10 dont even bother with the battery.
it should sit flat above 12v
charge over 14v
it doesnt have to be band on 14.4 and what not, give it abit of leway due to age. if its loosing charge, then is it charging in the first place ?

new battery, and check the output of the alternator.

the thing is the engine turned over 3-4 times but wouldnt fire....

then the battery completely died. its cut out on her a few times say first thing on a morning goin to work etc. the battery looks new, i might put my battery in and see how it lasts.

is it common for a battery to go dud?

You can buy testers you put across a battery to tell you why it isnt charging. Could be the alternator or the battery might just be knackered. On my old VTR the battery would work just after the car had been driven but leave it like an hour or so and it would just die!

Try taking the battery out overnight & putting it on charge, see if it holds it`s charge then.

very common for the cold to weed out dodgy batteries, charge the battery and start the car, stick the meter on it and see if your seeing the voltage go up some with engine running, if it is then your alt is fine, if it keeps going flat then your battery is dud

normally happens alot around this time of year

Cheers all. I've put my battery out the spax in today And started fine, drove around for half hour full lights on and a/c on, came back left it for a few hours and I think it struggled to start tbh. Well I'll know more if it doesn't start tomorrow I've put the one battery on charge, then I'll test it when I re fit it. hope the alt hasn't gone
