Default Front Wiper Electrics

Help!!
I'm having problems with the front wipers, they work on full and fast mode but do not work on intermittent or when you pull the lever forward for screenwash...also when you flick the lever down for one swipe you have to hold it down till it's completed the swipe or it stops mid-swipe. I've had the car since new (2002 model) and it's never done this before.

If the motor had gone I would assume they wouldn't work at all, so could there be a loose connection? Any help would be appreciated, especially if you can help me fix it as my MOT is due in Jan!!!

I'm not even 100% sure it's the motor? Wouldn't they be not working at all if the motor needed replacing?
Plus I wouldn't have a clue how to change it myself...the washer motor was a pain in the ass!
