Default Timing up help!

This is for a friend and I have no knowledge of timing

On my vts i removed the head in a rush lol. With the head off i aligned the two cam shafts with 8mm bolts but i didnt position the crank. The flywheel is also removed as its on an engine stand. How do i go about checking the position of the crankshaft?? There is a line on the crank pulley but cant see a mark on the engine block where it aligns.

If your looking for tdc (top dead centre) then piston 1 (in this case the one closest to the gearbox cus its french) needs to be at the top. The only other way that it would be timed is that its in the safe position and all the pistons are half way down the bores (all equal) look at the valves if the end 4 on each end are shut then would be tdc, if there open then id assume its safe position... But always turn the engine over before starting if it stops with like a clunk its a valve but will be fine as its just under hand power not starter power :-)

When putting a new belt on you'll see 3 white lines on the belt 2 close together and 1 at the other end. On the cranck pulley there is a groove in it do align the white mark which is on its own with that on , on the cam pulleys there's a little lug on each of them, now align the two other white lines with then and tension it accordingly .

The first thing you get taught about timing at college is never to use the timing lines on the belt as they can be out by miles.

If its anything like the 8v,(and I don't know that it is so if you try it be very careful turning by hand ) when the cam pulleys are locked with the timing holes

Pistons 1 and 4 should be at top dead centre

Use a long thing screw driver through the plug hole and find it, tighten the belt on and turn it by hand to make sure there's is no valve to piston contact,
