Make an alignment mark with your wheels dead central 1st,then put a longish bar on a ratchet get a mate to hold the wheel while you undo the bolt.Just don`t round the bolt head off.

get the steering lock on and undo it, they are tight but once you get to the point where it feels like its gonna round off it usually starts to budge, maybe give it a few taps with the hammer to shock it but don't hit it too hard obviously. Oh and once you take it off if you look closely at the steering wheel and the columb there are 2 arrows that you line up to put it back on straight I only noticed this the 2nd time around

Seems a bit unlucky, mine came off no problem the other day. You're not using some wimpy 1/4" ratchet are you? You'll need something with some poke to overcome the treadlock as mentioned above.

1/2 Ratchet would be advisable, it may have been done up too tight.
