How have people refitted a gearbox in the engine bay?
Hi, sorry for a bit if a stupid question here but I'm half way through changing my box on my vtr, so far I've got it all out, changed the clutch etc but I'm struggling to get the box back in and aligned.
At the moment I'm using a trolley jack under the box with a not very mechanically minded mate pushing it about whilst I tried to lift/ wrestle the box into place and its not worked tbh, I'm thinking of using a wratchet strap and some wood across the engine bay to try and go for a round 2, but does anyone have any tips for fitting a box for the first time?
Also what method do people use that have diy'd a box back on themselves?
Is a trolley jack and some wrestling the standard method or should I go and get an engine crane to do the job properly?

Make sure the clutch is aligned and the splines LIGHTLY greased. Make sure the back engine mount and link are completely out the way, then lean in the top of the engine bay and lift the box on. If the clutch is aligned correctly it should locate fairly easily.

an engine crane is best
2 people one pushing it up from underneath and one from the top aligning/pulling it on works well
Can be done on your own but to be honest its a ball ache

I used to use the trolley jack approach but now I just get the car up high. Get under the car and get the box up onto my chest then lift it into place. It's hard work but once you've got the knack, it's a lot less messing around than using a jack.
What Gandi said is likely the easiest, using an engine crane. Just because of the fine grain height adjustment you've got.

When i did it I used and engine removal crane.. The engines needs to be supported so as most people would be using the crane to provide support we got a trolley jack under the oil sump and supported the weight of the engine. Then used a sling around the gearbox and pulled it up and inline via the engine bay then pushed it home.
It is a fiddly arse job I must admit but persistance is key and a 2nd man will help no end.

I get a mate to pull it up from top and I'm underneath to lift it and line it up
