Leaving a car uninsured?
Hi everyone,
A bit confused as to insurance laws. If a car is Taxed and MOT'd, and registered in my name, am I allowed to leave it parked on the road if it isn't insured in my name? Both my parents have insurance that allows them to drive other cars, so would my car count as being insured even though it doesn't have a specific policy tied to it?
Thanks

If you want it to be on the road it has to be insured.
If your parents want to drive it the car needs to be insured on its own policy. They cannot drive an uninsured car on their policy.

ok thank you, i'm guessing that's the same for all public land, ie it can't be left on a public green outside my house as the same rules apply as to it being actually on the road?

It says on the insurance policy, the policy holder is insured to drive any other car providing the car being used is insured by its owner

Ahh ok I see. Looks like i'll have to find some farm or something to keep it on for a month or 2 while I get the funds together to insure it, oh the joys of being an 18 year old trying to buy a VTS

Just get a VTR, half the price in insurance and you don't loose all that much in regards to speed and power.

I'd prefer a VTS, there's just something about them. Plus, this one is posi blue, 76,000 miles and only 5 minutes down the road, and going for £450

To be fair, if it's a village green, and there are farms.. I'm guessing it's rare to see the police around there? Especially a traffic car with ANPR to see if it's insured.. I'd just take the risk.. Worse that can happen is they impound the car.. Then you just leave it, and lose the £450, or pay £150 to have it released and get a parent to insure it to get it out..
Not condoning driving without insurance, but it sounds like if it's in a village, it's probably not going to get smashed into by anyone, so you have no need to worry if it's just sat still

^that's what I'd do. Problem might not be police passing through though - its neighbours who have nothing better to do and end up ringing the police if the car has been parked there 'suspiciously' for a few weeks or more.
Happened to a mate of mine in a quiet village with nosey neighbours.

happens in my street regularly, lost count of how many cars/bikes were clamped then taken away. Find a parking space on private land.

VTS' are cheap as chips. If you can't insure it, what's the point in buying it? Just wait till you can afford the insurance, then buy a cheap one then?
Or am I missing something?

Ironic that you say that, you were right up until about 3 weeks ago where a house near mine was raided for being a drug den, now there's police coming down my road almost daily haha

No, you're right, I decided not to in the end, my parents talked me out of it for precisely this reason, I think it was just a case of impulsivity and me not thinking about it, there's always gonna be a nice VTS for sale

Good call.
There'll now be a myriad of posters saying that VTS' are drying up and you'll never get one.
