Ignition barrel - Key wont turn inside it.
Hey guys, I went out shopping and came back to my car. I went to turn the ignition on as I normally would but the could wouldn't turn. I thought it may of been steering lock so I tried turning the wheel but it still wouldnt budge.
I called AA out and they said that my barrel is most probably knackered and it ended up with being towed home.
I'm just trying to remove the barrel now but cant work out how to. I've removed the covers and disconnected but I'm unable to remove the barrel itself, can anyone shed any light?
Also on replacing the barrel, how much will it cost roughly?
I've read some threads and as I've understood it, if I replace the barrel I'll have to get the locks on the doors/boot etc changed? is this true. And rough pricing up if possible?

I've never removed a barrel before so couldn't talk you through it mate.
But a locksmith should be able to rebuild your current barrel for a small fee and you won't have to dick about replacing the other locks.

No problem mate cheers for the reply anyway. Regarding the locksmith.. Does that involve a replacement of the barrel or a simple fix of the current barrel?

Unfortunately I'm at work miles away from home so I have no access to my car but my mates dad is sorting out my problem.. he's found a place that sells the barrel along with key and complete door lock set for £65 which I feel is reasonable.
He's also stated that I wont need to get a locksmith as he could tape the old key to some arial or somethingby the barrel i think.. and this tricks the barrel or ecu into thinking the new key is still the same old key.
I don't quite understand how that works but has anyone had the same problem and tried the way my mates dad suggest.
Does it actually work?

you cannot easily remove barrel with out turn the key in lock as this unlocks 2 locking pins if you key wont turn either way round you will either have to get a locksmith out to look at it might work or you will have to forcibly remove it drill hammer chisel etc

My wife's 2007 XC90 had this problem that the key would not turn past Position I.I seem to have fixed it. I loosened the steel plate on the bottom of the lock and this freed a metal fragment which breaks in the bottom of the lock cylinder assembly. I did remove the chip with a wire, but it may be sufficient only to loosen the plate and let the chip fall.Then one gentleman suggested me to contact Bolingbrook locksmith.I contacted them they are very much friendly and cooperative.They come in time and solve my problem at affordable prices.

if you remove all the covers and your steering wheel you should be able to get to the metal shroud that the barrel sits in, if I remember correctly there are three locking pins that you can push in with your fingers and the barrel will slide out.
