Cool so ive got about 1k to chuck into my gti

the only modifications it has is lowered , exhaust, induction kit currently.

its been sat off the road for about a year or more though, starts up fine after jumping it though which was a nice surprise, the engine seems fine so not going to replace it till it goes bang.

ideally im looking to get 200bhp out of the car in the next year or so, im a bit of a novice mechanically speaking , any advice on what to buy first?

its a 2001 106 gti.

£1k isn't going to get you a TB set up and management plus everything else needed.

You're probably going to want to go down the Manifold, Cat Cams 743's, Mapped by Chipwizards and if you've change go for a set of B8's and springs, constella gear linkages, BakerBM quick shift etc.

Just fit a 75bhp direct injection nitrous oxide setup. It's the cheapest way you'll hit 200bhp.

after buying pads/drilled discs aall round, new tyres all round, i should have about 1k left to spend just on the car at the moment, can add bits and bobs every month , when the engine goes bang is when i will think about turbo, is this an easy enough diy job? no chance im spending 8k getting a garage to do it lol

The only way a turbo works out cheap is if you buy someone elses failed project or from someone breaking a turbo/sc'd car.

What's making you think the engines going to blow? Why not spend a bit on preventive maintenance and save yourself some ballache and money in the long run.

Manifold, exhaust, cams, map should see about 140bhp. Catcams are £300 and a manifold, if you get a cheap one, could be as cheap as £120 from ebay. There's little point in chasing 200bhp, it just isn't going to happen unless you've the knowledge of the likes of Sandy to do all the engine work yourself. Even then I doubt you'd even get close to 200bhp for your budget.
Spend the money on handling upgrades. I still maintain my best bang for buck mods were grp n engine mount kit, constella grp n linkages, BakerBM quick shift & powerflex wishbone and rear beam mounts. You'd get that lot new for ~£300. My next upgrade is Bilstein B8's and springs but you're talking £400+.

I seriously wouldn't bother wasting money on drilled discs. I don't rate them for competition use never mind road use. A decent spec plain disc is plenty. Better spending the money on changing the brake set up with new calipers. You can get something like the 288mm brake set up for reasonable money. I'd start with that. Then sort the suspension, then move on on to engine mods.

nothing makes me think the engine is on its way out apart from the "made in france", probably has a lot to do with how untidy the engine bay is.

just wanting a nippy sleeper that puts a smile on my face and sadness on other drivers faces, looking to keep the car for a long time, since most of them have been wrapped round trees it would be nice to keep 1 in storage lol.

i just want the car to be safe , dont want to be taking a corner and have something let me down and end up in a field, or worse lol.

Wheres the car going to be used? This will dictate what modifications will work.
You can get 180bhp+ without going to an enginebuilder but 200bhp may be hard.
Whatever that will be fast

Being realistic then:
New pads, disks, tyres.
You may as well have a brake fluid change as it'll be the same crap thats sat in the system for years.
Suspension will make such a huge difference to how it drives and handles, Bilstein b8's come highly recommended although they are not cheap.
4-2-1 exhaust manifold and full system will free up a bit of power and add some noise.

engine wise - a set of cams will give you a nice power increase plus getting the standard ECU mapped to get the most out of your induction kit, exhaust and new cams.
As it's been sat for over a year you may as well get a new timing belt kit (belt, rollers, tensioners etc) and waterpump as well as auxillary belt. Not forgetting service items - oil, filter, plugs, battery(possibly) and Fuel filter.
Drain and refill gearbox oil
Quickshift gear linkage and uprated engine mounts.

All that will in all likelyhood cost more then £1k, you won't be anywhere near 200bhp, but you will have a nicely tuned, well sorted car that will drive great and put a smile on your face every time you take it out, as well as hopefully lasting quite a while!
