which is fire rings and kevlar --not mls

we used to use the axgti on our 1294cc tu --cos it had a little kink in it the round fire ring to allow larger inlet valve usage

only ever bought 1 cit sport up rated one --over£100 in 1991+ never had gasket problems with that engine anyway
why? you having problems with h/gaskets
any 1360 h/gasket should be fine --unless you got bigger inlet valves in it or there is another problem --like liner seals or corrosion where the liner fit in the block.making seals leak, due to antifreeze not being changed often enough

Suitable for the 1600s John?

I don't need one now but it's good to know you have them.

That's great to hear about the 1360 hg John, thanks.

A genuine 1.4 XSI gasket is £19, a genuine 1294 gasket is £79.

My engine has 123k miles on it and a previous owner fitted a 'Superchip' to the ECU which made it overfuel and also removed the rev limiter. I'm guessing this is why my car is showing the signs of a blown headgasket. I have since replaced the ECU with a standard rallye one.

The reasoning behind me thinking my Hg is gone is the colour of my coolant and all the gunk in it that smells like fuel/oil...

yep looks like it to me -- but question is why ? --old age or lack of coolant changes ?
if no water in oil ,then its not liner seals .
replace rad cap +thermostat at same time --could even be cap not holding pressure and allowed temp to climb +boil in head at some point
do not let liners move up when head off --lock crank --if they do then you will need to change liner seals

only way toclean all that oily crap out correctly is after rebuild do not fill with coolant -- but stick a tin of gunk in with the water run till warm =drain
as you drain water to do head that crap will stick to rad core =block etc
then refill with just water warm yp again and check no more crap --then drain and refill with coolant --red type good for 5 years at least

No water in the oil at all. The engine is on 123k but the previous owner said he replaced the head gasket @ 121k miles (3 years ago)

I'm good with service intervals and regularly replace fluids every 6-8 months, even if the car has only covered a couple of hundred miles in that time.

Believe it or not, that's a new cap and a new thermostat & housing. I've put radiator cleaner in it and flushed it about half a dozen times. I've even bought a new radiator but don't want to fit it until I sort this sludge problem.

Thanks for all the advice John, you're invaluable to this forum.

good point welshpug --
but I thought it was only saxo vts that had the heat exchanger on the oil filter

seen a couple of those leak internally and give impression h/gasket was gone

It has indeed still got the heat exchanger. Strangely enough a friend mentioned that the other day. It looks a bit battered to be honest. I've tried googling for a replacement part, searched the part number from Servicebox and searched ebay but I can't find a replacement.

If I take it off does it leave the screw in bit for the oil filter on the block? Or do I have to buy one of those from a car without the heat exchanger to get the oil fiter to attach to the block?

you can test first before removal --link out the hoses with a bit of 15mm water pipe --and see if you get oil coming from the unit

to remove -replace long adaptor with short std screwed bit from any saxo or tu series engine --then refit oil filter

You mean to link the two pipes coming off the top radiator hose? I'll do that tonight.

Thanks again. I'll do that tonight whilst the missus is out, hopefully that's the issue and I can just do away with the heat exchanger.

I've found that a bottle of Holts speedflush and a couple of dish washer tablets (with the power ball cleaner bit removed) crumbled in the old coolant will flush out that oil. Done it loads of times on Rover K-series engines which have a penchant for HGF and filling the cooling system with oily mess and they've always ran clean after a flush. That said also a garden hose adaptor for your hot tap is worth it when flushing providing it'll reach to where you are performing the operation

never thought of dishwasher tablets--just old fashioned --but yes that sounds like winner-dishwashers run at low temp so running up engine temp should really get them fizzing
