clutch replacement question
I have a 2000 reg saxo vtr and i believe the clutch release bearing is knackered. Its making a good awefull noise and the clutch bites at the very last minuite and judders when you pull away.
My question is i have been told its about a 5 1/2 hour job!
Is this right? is it an engine out job?
not something i want to take on myself but dont want to get stung by a garage.
whats the cost of the clutch itself?

Well, you have to take the gear box off for starters, and that's not easy for a non-mechanic. There's some places around that specialise in clutch replacements, and also don't charge that much for the labour. Get yourself a complete clutch kit from Euro Car Parts or GSF, and then take it to one of these clutch places for fitting.

Jazzy, both companies I mentioned have web sites. You can get a quote there...
Here you go mate: http://www.mrclutch.com/
They even offer a free clutch checking service, you never know, your clutch might be OK. They have loads of places scattered across England.

It took me and a mate about 3 hours on my drive to do mine. Had a few problems on the way but got it all sorted. He works for peugeot so knows what he's doing aswell!

Yes mate, changing the clutch is fairly labour intensive. You can try calling around other places, but don't expect it to be much cheaper than that quote. You get some mobile type mechanics that charge around £30 - £40 an hour. That might be a little cheaper...

5 1/2 hours?! I removed one in just over an hour last night and that was with basic tools and a crap jack. Would take another 2hrs or so to get it back on with the same limited tools and space, because refitting is always the tricky bit. But they're just trying to rob you there mate.
Realistically? Should be around £120-£150 in labour and the clutches cost £40 - £90 depending on the make, and the year of your car, as there are two different types for Saxos.
