Warning to anyone insured under their parents name. UPDATE 1st PAGE
FROM BBC WEBSITE TODAY: 08/03/2008
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programme...ch/7282236.stm
TAKE NOTE!
Insurance industry is cracking down on these people.
If you are the main driver on your car, and the insurance policy is in your parents name, then "fronting" as it is called is illegal, and there has been three cases recently of people within car forum communities where the insurance company has not paid out after a write off. In one case where the vehicle was registered in the lads name, but parents were the policy holder, the driver was hauled in as every insurance policy states "The vehicle is registered in your name"
Be Warned......

tbh its not the best way to get insured at all, but its the most popular way for young drivers to get insured for any sort of decent money..
best way is ur own name, but if the price is £3k and £1200 on ya dads name, i know most people will go on their rents name as it saves a shit load of money..

agreed, for all they know then you are just taking the car for a drive
plus then when it comes to resale, and its under your mums name for example, you can pass it off as it being owned by a careful lady owner

That is EXACTLY what happened to my mate Ben - car registered and insured in dad's name - insurance company wouldn't pay out as they believed that the boy was driving it all the time. And it had been modified too.....(declared) and the insurance people were like "yeah, cos a 45 year old would do that to a car!"

Exactly, that's what Ive done for the last two years. Quinn wouldnt let me insure it as a named driver whilst it was still registered in my name anyway, they said it would have to be in my mums name for her to be the main driver on the policy. So they practically told me to do it anyway.
Saves shite loads of money, insurance is a friggin joke! I still pay about £1200

If there was an accident they could look into where the young driver was going at the time and if it was a regular trip that he took (eg college, work, etc) they would get suspicious. Then they'd know they'd been had and might get a bit upset. No?

If they expect people to play by the rules then they should make sure their premiums arent so stupidly high for such a comparitivly poor age group.

I do totally agree, but the two cases I am thinking of, the cars were registered in parents names with the lads on the policy....modified etc.
Insurance company look at car and say "Would a 50 year old be driving that as their main vehicle? No, I don't think so"
I agree with the cheap comments though! It is stupid the cost of insurance for first timers!

They don't know that?
I saw some old lady around local to me, driving a Puma - Not just a standard one, it looked pretty one off, didn't have any aftermarket stuff, but looked smarter than the average 1.7 Zetec.
I say old, she was probably 60-65, but still - Doesn't mean to say a 50 year old man (My dads only 42!).. so 42 year old man wouldn't drive a Modified Saxo.
Doesn't mean jack, you could argue it.. though i have known them to ask neighbours who is the main driver of that car..
There's ways around it in both respects.
Prices are stupid though!

I do agree with that, but I will keep on pointing to this one case (and since then, another) where they won't pay out as they suspect that it is fronting.
