Default noise from what i think is my drivers side driveshaft

ok i was driving yesterday afternoon with my music up and felt a vibration on the accelorater so turned my music down to hear a awful grinding noise, kinda similar to thje sound of a window wiper screachin on a dry window, so today i decided to get the AA involved as i didnt fancy a 60mile trip with this noise, he comes out breaks my sideskirt and passenger side arch then tells me that its the bearings in the diff , if the bearing in the diff has gone would this noise be coming from the drivers side? also if it helps i jacked the car up and spun the offending wheel and it makes a slight clicking noise when its spinning, any ideas what it could be and rough price for getting it fixed would be good too
Cheers
