Default lamda sensor

dunno if this is in the right section or not.
right, got a prob with my 2002 vtr. basicaly its going through petrol like theres no tommorow and if i sit at 30mph in 4th gear if feels like its running on kangeroo juice. ive decatted it and ive put both lamda sensors in the engine bay as the one that goes in the downpipe got the thread stripped when i took it out of the old manifold so i thought id put it in there for a little while. am i right in thinking that is what is making it run shitty? i.e running on choke all the time cos the ecu thinks the air is too clean/lean so pours more fuel in?
also, the new sensor i have has a blue plug and i need one with a green plug. are they different sensors or can i simply cut the wires and re connect them to the other plug? sorry for the essay but only getting 70 odd miles to a tenner of fuel is starting to get to me!
