Will be head gasket if it's around the alternator area.

It doesn't have to lose power, head gaskets can fail in a number of ways
  • Between cylinders, causing compression loss & consequently power loss
  • Between a water jacket and cylinder, causing water loss and white smoke
  • Between a water jacket and oilway, causing emulsification in the oil etc.
  • or - as you might be experiencing, betwen the oilway and the outer gasket, causing an oil leak

The latter seems to be quite common with these TU engines. Tell tale signs are oil dripping down the front of block around the alternator.

Starts off as barely noticeable (i.e don't notice the oil loss via dipstick), but I imagine it gets steadily worse?

depends on how its driven really, as oil pressure increase with revs so higher revs will force the oil out more.

Generally tho it will get worse over time. Headgaskets are simple enough to do and parts are cheap so not really an issue IMO.

I have a small h/g leak on the punto.

Oil running down the block.

Loss of water, but dosn't loose any more when it gets to a certian level. I ALWAYS check this daily.

Loss of oil, quite a lot tbh. This gets replenished daily.

White smoke always. This is a tell tail sign.

It dose NOT get hot and runs and starts first time sweetly.

I've got a h/g here with me now, just not got the tools to change it over.

Am I right I'm saying the vts had 2 gaskets rocker cover and the lower one mines leaking a bit from the lower one. Is it simple job to jut replace the gasket and could I get away with not skimming the head ?

guess you mean a cam ladder is leaking? if so, remove rocker cover, strip cam belt off, take out the cam and reseal the ladder, no need to skim anything
