Default Gear box has broken?

The gear stick has become very loose, moves a long way from left to right, as though it has become detached from something- Don't think 1st gear is working as slow accelerating, think there was a burning smell when first happened? Also doesn't seem to be a 5th gear and it wont go into reverse. What do you reckon has happened? I'm stuck away from home- I could drive it back but I'm wondering whether I could do more damage if I drive it. Don't know anything about fixing cars and that, just wondering if anyone has any advice? Thanks

Id firstly get under the car and check all the linkages and selector on the box, as it wont take to long to check them all, all you need to do is jack the car up, have a look and give all the linkages a wriggle make sure there still all clipped on, not bent or snapped etc. Check the pin hasnt fell out of the selector on the back of the box. Mayaswell before you drive it.
