Thats not a case study... Where is the evidence smoking directly costs the NHS that amount?
And how does it kill one in two smokers? Where is the evidence
Oh and how remarkable that you used the figure 1.7 BIllion when a quick google search brings up and article with the exact same figure but for alcohol related expenditure!

Oh and btw that was from 2004 so out of date now.

Your first point is mutually exclusive to the argument regarding the NHS.
They won't stop trying to cure it, they will however, have to spend less treating patients that have cancer because of their own stupidity.
Tobacco smoking costs the NHS £1.4-1.7 billion each year (Cohen et al 1998, Stapleton et al 1999) and 1 in 3 adults, aged 16 years of age or over, are thought to smoke in the UK (Steele 2000). Approximately half of all smokers will eventually die from smoking related diseases (Hanrahan et al 1996): all smokers have a life expectancy that is 8 years less than those who have never smoked (Stapleton et al 1999). 30% of heart disease is attributable to smoking ( http://www.mmaf.org/smoking.htm): numerous studies conclusively show that smokers have a two- to four-fold increased incidence of CHD than non-smokers (Hanrahan et al 1996). This further underlines smoking as a major cause of morbidity and mortality.

Don't get me wrong; if someone wishes to smoke themselves to death then they have every right to do so. However, why should they have a right to damage my health or that of others around me whilst doing so?

i think either way, if there is a way of reducing the cost of NHS by banning smoking then it a good thing. The NHS spends alot on a&e from drunken nights out but there isnt really a way of stopping people from drinking in public places is there?

Exactly - that's how freely available the information is.
Your ignorance with regards to the damage of smoking, quite literally, astounds me. I presume you are of the ilk that believes the Earth is flat, having not witnessed the curvature with your own eyes...

I'm not insulting you - just astounded that you can believe that smoking doesn't impact massively, in a detrimental to health manner, on people's lives.
People need to be educated as to the effects, perhaps then they won't believe it's 'cool' to smoke...

I dont think the goverment have the right to ban smoking in pubs!
Its just wrong. Surely it is completly upto the discression of the landlord/owner of the pub.
whats it got to do with anyone else.
End of the day, its there pub, if they dont want people smoking let them decide.
Worst of all say the landlord is in there own pub, now theyve got to go upstairs or outside for a fag, fucking rediculous
Free country indeed!

i don't mind people around me smoking, but i do think that they should respect others who do mind people smoking around them, at the end of the day if you smoke in an enclosed space, your still polluting the air being breathed in by non smokers! Should deffo be banned in places where food is served too!!
