Bring the loom to mine when you stay over in july Josh
I don't think i'll get much of a chance to track it before the ring, probably going for a half day at brands to check it's all ok, brakes are adequate, handling is ok, scrub tyres in, check gearbox is alright etc etc ya know, i wanna be sure it can handle zee germany
How did you get them for £50 for 4? that's not new is it!!!
Cheers Jay.
It's going to look SO much tidier when i've had my ways with it, things will take shape very quickly soon as i've got loads of time booked off work in june and july and the weather will be acceptable so i will actually be able to work on it!

i had them from my work, they have only covered 1 track day in a westfield so hardly any wear on the tyres.only trouble is they are 205/50/15 so ive bought some spacers.
its a shame you cant do any trackdays before the ring. when is the trip to the ring by the way?

I will do brands, half a day there is harder on the car than several days at llandow lol it's a hilly bastard of a track with some challenging corners, i love that place though. Ring is at the beginning of july. 5th trip for me, totally obsessed with the place
I was looking into 205/50s but i decided not to for now till i've seen what clearance i get with 195/50s, will trim the arches if need be, who cares about full lock

Depends what wheels you have
205s are only 10mm wider, that's 5mm per side, so it could be close.
Danny let me know how they go! The ring is awesome

Alex quick question as I think you'll know the answer to this......
How do you propose to ditch the power steering as I want to do this but properly, and replace it with a pov spec saxo rack and non PAS assembly, HOWEVER, the ssc geeks are saying it'll rub on full lock etc. How are you doing yours? thanks!

I de-rammed my standard rack this time round. It requires the shorter centre bolt from a late non pas rack, you ditch the pump and pipes, unbolt the ram from the drivers side, then have to take the rack off to get to the torx on the underside of the centre bolt(holds the track rods & centre bush to the rack, and the ram to them both) to grip it and take the nut off, then swap the bolt for the shorter version and bish bash bosh you're done. PAS rack without the shit attatched. It will scrub on full lock using either type of non PAS rack, and AX & S1 106 ones do fit but they use a different type of track rod assembly. Also if you change to a non pas rack you need to change the column etc.
If you want more details i can write you a guide?

Guide please
Easy enough to do with the engine in / inlet off ?
Would be tempted to do this when i eventually get round to swapping the engine. But would like to be able to put it back to normal again without removing the engine again.

Cheers Alex. a guide WOULD be great if you can get the time to do one - with pics too if poss! So are you sayng that if I were to get ALL the gubbins from an S1 rallye inc. the track rods etc then it would work and wouldn't rub on full lock? What did you do on your previous saxo then? Ideally i'd like to do it properly with replacement parts rather than modding my existing PAS one. Is there any way to do it and avoid rubing on full lock?

Bastards
There are like 3 types of rack.
There's Type 1 which has the track rods bolted to the rack seperately so two small bolts, with rubber centre bushes, metal rose joints are available to replace the rubber bushings.
There's Type 2 which is on random cars, mine was apparently off a 106 xsi although all S1 sport models i've had/seen have type 1 racks, as do early saxos and S2s without PAS. Type 2 rack consists of the track rods attatched to the rack via 1 bolt, with a double balljointed centre bush so no rubber in it at all. It's essentially a PAS rack without any of the connections for the pas pipes nor a ram attatched.
Type 3 is a PAS rack, same as type 2 but with power steering.
Type 1 and 2 have more lock than standard, i tried both types on my vts and both had similar results, although i managed to end up with loads of play in my type 2 rack so went back to type 1 with it's rubbery goodness. Type 1 and 2 use different columns, where the pinion shaft goes into the rack is extended on PAS racks, this means if you fit a non pas rack you would need to change the seal for a non pas one, which would be a right bastard. or you could do what i did and cut it. Then there's the fact you've gotta take everything off the rack, which is also a fuckon.
Converting pas rack to non pas is easy and some other people have done it to good effect, which is why i'm doing it this time. No problems with lock, lot less hassle, free.

ok cheers dude. When you say more lock can you clarify what you mean? There'll be no prob of it seizing if you convert a PAS to non PAS will there?
