I personally wouldnt be buying a body in the post from the states.
I made sure mine I could view it and check it in person, uk forums are ok but americunts theres no comeback + import fees if you get stung, marking as a gift isnt clever for the money.

ebay has loads of 1ds on usually.
I bought mine from there, just see one local init.
Even second hand shit from states you can get stung by customs, I really wouldnt want my expensive camera kit marked as a gift and sent on the cheap.

a shutter can go at 10k or 100million k. its just a guide, lower shutter ones are on there for more £££ depends how tight you are and how much stick you give the shutter over a year or two.

plus the shutter acuations cant really give you the whole story to the life of a camera. for example over one weekend at a motorsport event you could shoot 4,000 images, do this 5 times and you are already on 20,000 shots.
however mr amateur blokey could have had his camera 4 years, taken it on holiday to loads of different places, had i bashed around on planes etc got sand in it on the beach etc but only taken 5,000 shots

The milage on the shutter is quite important still, hence why prices relfect that. A 1d will have taken loads of knocks usually lol

one question about the 1d mkii/mkiin
They have the same ISO range as the 20D. Will they perform better at those ISOs than the 20 does, or will there not be any improvement with that?

better at the top end.
Not hugely though as its a body designed in 2004.
Still better AF, more focus points, shooting on twin cards bla bla and the fact it hurts alot more when you mash someone in the skull with it = win
Also they dont have the same range as the 20D doesnt shoot at 50, 320, 500, 640, 1000, 1250 iirc
just 100,200,400,800,1600,3200

might see if i can find nay examples of 640 and 1000 on them. I doubt i would be using any higher than them, only put ISO up towards the end of the day at Croft for example. hence wanting good performance from it.

ive shot at up to 1250, heck ive gone 3200 before but 1000,1250 is just about fully useable.
500 and 640 is fine, i use it in the club a fair amount

I am a cunt.
Cunts are useful
Dont ask me to do a proper iso increment back to back data shoot, I really cant be fucked and im currently sorting my gear on charge for this weekends efforts.
Sayer has one/people on forums will do, just post out asking for someone to let you try for a couple of mins. Word of warning though, using a 1D will make you hate the 20 once you have figured out how it reacts totally differently lol
