You're all saying well does it matter as i have money and the answer is yes it does as i could have sold that engine within the first week of Ed wanting it. But no i held it then he messed me about on collection.
I then had to sell the engine really cheap the same day as it couldn't be left on my drive.

Difficult one this, as neither has intended to scam/be awkward as others have said.
Tbf though, nobody made you sell it cheaper. You chose to. You sold it the same day for less, thats your choice. Ed would have collected later that day.
Also, what I highlighted above. You never asked for a deposit, Ed offered to put deposit down to reserve it, which you didnt do tbh cos you sold it ON the day he was due to collect!!!!
If you never asked for a deposit, whats the problem refunding it?
Im not siding either way here btw, cos I can see the argument from both sides. Its just 1 of those things unfortunatly.
Personally though, Ed put deposit down from his own choice, you sold it.
Just refund him and have done. Its no massive loss to you mate
