both lenses are good mate, but with a focal range between 50-500m you might find the images appear a little flat, i would probably go with the canon but maybe invest a little more and see if you can get the canon 100 - 400mm as this would be more versitle

have a look on ebay shops mate you can get some good deals, i picked up a new canon 28-135 image stablizer lens for £220 and in jessops its £550

just go careful, as u may have to pay vat and import duty on it when it gets delivered... check with mike cracknell, i think he sometimes has to get payment before delivering some items...

I heard good reviews about the 50-500mm despite its size.

the canon is an L lens so I would expect bloody good image quality (better than the sigma) on top of the fact its a prime lens (no zoom) so it should be uber sharp. But remember that the applications for the prime are limited whereas the 50-500mm has a slightly wider scope for usage.

I think i will probably end up going for the sigma, it seems to have a good reputation and it sounds really good value for money
