how to tell the age of an engine
I have bought a 16v vts engine and don't know how to tell if it will need a 3 plug ecu or a one plug any help is much appreciated

look at throttle.....the tps sensor...if have this want a 1plug ecu..

there is one of the sensors on the throttle bodys
I take it the 3 plug does not have this at all..........?????

doesn't matter, just fit the sensors that match the ecu and loom you have,

as above, doesnt matter, swap everything over and they fit single plug or triple plug

cheers guys this should help a lot
will give changing all the sensors over
looking for someone to re=map and set the car up after the engine is in
any suggestions ?????

Also don`t mk2`s have an egr valve on the front of the engine?

as the car is a vtr with a vtr loom and ecu at presant
