enclosed induction
if you had really good cold air feeds to a open iduction kit would it be as good as a enclosed one...
im going to have a go at a cold air feed from where each fog light used to be and pipe them right up to induction kit

you could alwary run piping down to the fog light and put the filter where the fog light used to be.
this is what i want to do anyway
but obiviously on the other side as this vts has a turbo

imo, if the cold air supply was good enough the open filter would be better than the enclosed.

because the open filter usually has a bigger surface area than an enclosed, which would offer slightly less restriction. An ok analogy would be a toothpaste through a toothpaste tube, if the top was smaller it requires more effort to squeeze the paste through. so having less surface area means that a greater volume of air has to pass through given area, increasing the restriction.

i do get that part however my procomp filter is just as big as most open filters i have seen about and the old "engine will only take as much as it needs" sticks in my mind?

regardless scott, a filter is never going to be 100% unrestrictive... so whilst your 1.6 completes a cycle (2rpm) it will intake maybe 1.550litres (for instance), it could be greater or smaller difference - i havent come across efficiency data for various filters tbh. but if someone finds some I'll be most interested

Rite :-) there are 4main types of filters
1) Panel 2) Open Cone 3) Cone in Scoop 4) Enclosed
Each has its good points and bad points - for this thread we can scrub option 1)
Ok 2) Open Cone has a larger area that 3) and 4) but if not supplied with enough cold air then it will suffer from Heat Soak and under perform.
3) is shielded from heat by the scoop and air collects around the cone and is Almost Forced into the cone, but air supply is normally restricted by the size of hole in the Slam Panel which the scoop bolts Flush to + cones ares usually smaller than an open cone simpley because it has to fit into a enclosed scoop.
4) is the best of both worlds as 4) will have a decent sized filter inclosed from all heat and being feed from a Cold Air Supply, but this filter is only as good as the Cold Air Feed as this is the filters Only supply unlike 2) Open cone.
If a 2) Open Cone could be safely placed at the front of the car without gettin wet this would prove the best performance, but in this country it just aint gona happen.
I have had both Scoop (green) and Open (Savage) and found the Scoop good once moving but was sometimes straved from a stand still and the Open better from Standing start but I will openly admit nowhere as good as the scoop on the move at motorway speed pickup.
The best comprimise would to have a scoop with a cold air feed going into the bottom of the scoop to aid air flow

i have an old fast car issue were they did loads of induction kit tests on a 2002vts, used all sorts of kits:-bmc, green, powertec, k & n and carbon itg.
to start with they did a rolling road with the stock air box/filter set up, then fitted each induction kit and did another test, showing bhp and torque gains with a graph, the best gains were seen from the green powerflow kit.

nice.... sadly max flower earns its pennies not through the pay public buying the mag but by the advertising space and 'affliates'... ultimately they are going to keep their feeders happy first.
I'd take the test at face value to be honest. use your judgement when you are presented with facts and you wont go wrong
