Default 100w or 55w headlight bulbs?

Been looking on eBay for some white xenon lights. For the dip and full beam there seems to be two wattages. Which would be better? I'm guessing 100w would be brighter. But whats the difference? And are there any disadvantages?

I'm fairly sure if the H4 isn't 55w then it isn't legal and they'll more than likely burn and melt the plugs that go onto the headlight with higher wattage.

100w lights are not legal on a road going vehicle, they're for offroad use only.

For xenon you need auto levelling headlights or suspension and a light washing system

The 'Xenon' bulbs he means are just the eBay special bulbs that have a blue coating, not proper ones

ive run 80-100's in my road car for nearly 2 years now and no problems, they are the blue tinted ones, but from the outside you cant notice. we have 80-100 whites in the van and the blues are a hell of alot crisper. ive also got blue tinted 120's in my spot lights and they have been fine as well for 2 years.

xenons are legal if you put them into a car that didnt have them from factory before 2005, after 2005 if they are retrofitted they then have to have the washers and self leveling headache stuff. if you are going for the ebay kits, buy the h4-3 as they are xenon dipped and main beam which makes a huge difference.

and before anyone comments why didnt i put xenons in mine, because 2 years ago it wasnt cost effective todo it, the decent kits were silly money and for a car thats worth as much as my shirt i didnt wanna spend the money

Can I ask why you think this is so?

He is some what mistaken. The HID kits that replace halogen "H" fit bulbs with HID "Xenon" bulbs are all not road legal. They do not comply with any of the required regulations. There is no way you can legally use these on the UK roads.

The part he is partly correct about is there are some instances where a HID bulb can legally be fitted with out auto levelling systems. However the light instillation still has to comply with regulations. This is simpler if your installing just a high beam and/or driving light setup and retaining a Halogen low beam. You can install a approved HID high beam system in a Saxo with out Auto levelling. However even then to re iterate H fit HID bulbs would not be legal. If you start talking Low beam it becomes a lot more complicated and there is no practical way you could do it legally.

a Xenon "bulb" is fine, theyre just a normal bulb with a Xenon instead of a Halogen gas around the filament, these are straight replacements for a normal H4 bulb.

However a HID xenon light unit is NOT, these use ballasts and a higher voltage, though lower wattage unit.
