I hope like the Big Induction thread that this sheads enough light for new members or anybody that is unsure about all things exhausty, this will never end the 'Whats the best exhaust for my car' question but at least I and others can direct people here to read for themselfs then return with a more direct question about exhaust systems.
It maynot be 100% correct in terms of back pressure and torque gains but I feel it gives enough information to enlighten a complete novice about the types of exhausts on the market.

fitted my magnex de-cat to my vts yesterday, car feels loads better pulls from lower down teh revs which i miss from having a vtr! bit loud for me, and was expecting more popping and raspyness from de-cat

actually you guys are getting gas speed mixed up with harmonics...
gases are slowed down by too much restriction so a good quality aftermarket system will free up the flow of gas out of the exhaust...
put your hand over the exhaust and the engine struggles and eventually dies this is back pressure at the most extreme
but harmonics work in a different way as they aid scavenging of the exhaust port, if you get the harmonics wrong you can end up going slower.
I have spent hours running my bike on a dyno studying exhaust harmonics and ther effect on performance and the difference is quite noticable between a bad system harmonic wise and and a good one and the pipe lengths were only marginally longer or shorter...
by harmonics I mean pressure waves just to clear that point

Just a quick note. i have flow tested the standard vts manifold. and flow wise it is good for around 300bhp. however, when our demo car is rolled without a 4-2-1, and then with a 4-2-1 i will be able to shed some more light.

just done my straight through backbox, its quiet and sprint, reroute
the pipe to make it smooth as possible too, 150mm(D)x450mm(L)
round resonator (50mm in/out) & no tip did the great job.
btw, header design got lots of detail, can't only judge by 4-1/4-2-1
, the pipe size, length, collector design...etc, all effect the output,
so 4-1/4-2-1 just for references.

very useful thread, according to some replies the back pressure part may not be accurate but the rest of it has sure helped me decide on a few things..
rep given for effort.
